After misfiring in her stable debut for Mack Hall at Narrogin, the five-year-old mare defied the outrageous odds of 200 to 1 to score one of the biggest upsets seen in Perth for years.
Stunned punters were left near speechless and adding insult to injury was Queen’s Sacrifice winning the race by defeating favourite Come On Emma by the barest of margins.
Sitting off the speed for jockey Keshaw Dhurun, in the home stretch, Queen’s Sacrifice burst through between runners and got the right bob on the line to win by a nose.
It was Hall’s first metropolitan win of the season and even if punters have erased it from their memories, it’s a milestone that he certainly won’t be forgetting in a hurry.
Just three years since going full time as a trainer, Hall was soaking up the incredible win, but conceded in his wildest imagination he wasn’t expecting much pre-race.
“To be honest, I almost scratched her,” Hall said.
“I thought we were no hope in this race.
“I was looking at going to Geraldton next week or something.
“I thought she’s got to go around today (Wednesday) and I’m glad I changed my mind.
“She got the world perfect run, and it worked out perfectly.”
The only mini dent in an otherwise dream result for Hall was not availing himself to the 200 to 1 odds on offer, but he didn’t let that dampen his enthusiasm.
“I didn’t have one cent,” Hall said.
“I backed it in the top six market at $6.50 and that was about it.”
Queen’s Sacrifice, who had time under elite trainer’s Dion Luciani and Luke Fernie, came to Hall after a stint in Geraldton and winning her sole race for Ron Cowl Jnr last February.
The daughter of Power didn’t make a big impression for her new stable first up at Narrogin, finishing an inglorious eighth, but Hall says the run was better than it looked.
“She had a few excuses,” Hall said.
“She sat wide, got back and never got into the race.
“It was just a write off, but drawing a gate today (Wednesday) was the key to turning her form around.”
When asked how he would be celebrating Queen Sacrifice’s amazing victory, Hall responded:
“I’ll be having a few beers for sure,” Hall said.
Queen’s Sacrifice returned $236.20 and $39.30 with online betting sites and swelled the quaddie to $161,195, 90.
