Racing Victoria is set to lose chief handicapper Greg Carpenter who has resigned to take up a position with the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Carpenter, who is the Executive General Manager – Racing, has been with RV for 17 years and will leave the organisation after he delivers the weights for the 2022 Melbourne Cup and Caulfield Cup on September 23.
He is only the ninth individual to handicap the Melbourne Cup in its 161-history with his first coming in Makybe Diva’s third successive Cup win in 2005.
Initially employed in the role of Chief Handicapper with RV, Carpenter’s role was expanded in 2011 when he took over in his current role leading the team of handicappers responsible for programming, handicapping and the delivery of 4300 races a year in Victoria.
Carpenter has also been Australia’s representative on the World’s Best Racehorse Committee since 2005 and is a former Chairman of the Australian Classifications Committee.
He said it had been a privilege to work with RV as well as having the honour to deliver the weights for the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cups.
“I’m immensely proud to have been part of an extraordinary executive team at Racing Victoria, most recently under the leadership of Giles Thompson, and to work alongside so many talented and passionate women and men across the organisation and broader industry,” Carpenter said.
“I leave Racing Victoria in the knowledge that the sport in Victoria is in an exceptionally strong position and well placed to continue to grow and deliver on behalf of all participants who work so hard on a daily basis to deliver great racing for all to enjoy.
“The time has come to take on the next challenge in my professional career and that is with the Hong Kong Jockey Club who are recognised globally as a world leader in our sport.
“In doing so, I will continue to closely follow Victorian and Australian racing with great interest.”
