Frolic has won the lucrative Inglis Classic at Randwick

Michael Freedman has struck for the second time in as many weeks in an important two-year-old race, training Frolic to win the Inglis Classic at Randwick.

A year after returning to Australia from Singapore to train firstly at Rosehill and now Randwick, Freedman is on the march with Teaspoon’s recent win in the Widden Stakes and Frolic coming from last to capture the $250,000 race on Monday.

“My stable is made up of young horses so it’s great to be getting amongst these better races,” Freedman said.

Frolic ($7) settled last of the 12 runners in the race restricted to Inglis Classic sale graduates but with a genuine tempo, jockey Tommy Berry knew his filly would be hard to hold out.

“I said to Michael if they are going to go quick she will settle back and win the race,” Berry said.

That’s the way it turned out with Frolic, a $100,000 yearling, sweeping widest to beat the favourite Sweet Deal ($2) by 1-1/4 lengths.

Lets Get Nauti Gal ($9.50) finished another 5-1/2 lengths away third.

“They’ve spaced the others,” Freedman said.

“We’ll see how she comes through today but hopefully we can press on and go a bit deeper into the autumn.”

Stretching Frolics out in distance is at the forefront of Freedman’s carnival plans, but the filly is likely to be given her chance to be part of the 2017 Golden Slipper build-up.

“We’ll have a look at that,” he said.

“I’ve always genuinely felt this filly will be even better over 1400 (metres) and perhaps once again when she gets to a mile.”

Sweet Deal, who finished third to Teaspoon in the Widden, was forced to sit wide and never got closer than three-deep before shooting to the front at the 300m.

“She had to do a bit more work than I expected but having said that the winner is very smart,” Sweet Deal’s jockey Jason Collett said.
