Richard Freedman has never tasted major Magic Millions success but believes he has the horse to win Saturday’s Magic Millions 3yo Guineas (1425m), but admits he’ll need some luck as new stable star Fashion Legend aims for his fourth win in a row.
As can be the case with three-year-old features, horses come into Saturday’s $2 million feature with a picket fence to their form. Current favourite Yellow Brick has won four in a row and both Soothsayer and Fashion Legend have won three on the bounce.
Freedman, who has been in co-training with his son Will for less than a year, believes Fashion Legend can win if he gets into a contest.
“He’s just a genuine racehorse. He’s a fighter too, if he can get himself in the fight here with a couple of hundred metres to run, it’ll be interesting,” Freedman said.
Freedman believes the horse, who has won four from seven, including a last start win in the Group 3 Magic Millions Vo Rogue Plate (1350m), has improved again since his last run on New Year’s Eve.
“He’s won 4 from 6. It’s hard to get a horse to do that, to keep winning, keep jumping grades, he’s put a picket fence together, it’s hard to find horses that will do that,” Freedman said.
Despite his winning record, the TAB have Fashion Legend at $23, with barrier 18 certainly tempering enthusiasm.
“He’s going fantastically well, he really is, but he’s got a big task, he’s drawn 18. That’s made the task pretty difficult but for him, he couldn’t be going better,” Freedman said.
As for the future, the stable will let the dust settle after Saturday but find it hard to put a ceiling on Fashion Legend, who has answered the call every time they’ve raised the bar.
“It’s hard to say (how good he is) because he’s improved every start and he hasn’t stopped improving.”
