Popular stayer Soulcombe, runner-up in the 2023 Melbourne Cup, could yet return to racing after resuming light work at Flemington.
The imported galloper has not been seen on race day since his Cup performance, having battled consecutive tendon injuries, but connections are encouraged by his latest progress.
Part-owner Ozzie Kheir said the Chris Waller-trained gelding has come through the early stages of his rehabilitation in good order and is building towards the next phase.
“He’s back with Chris Waller at Flemington and he’s been up to three-quarter pace so we’re all hopeful he can make his way back to the track,” Kheir said.
“We’re all realistic – he’s done it (tendon) twice – but he’s coming along well and could be ready to trial in about four to six weeks all things going well.
“All his owners have stayed in him as they all love him and it would be a great result just to get him back racing.”
Soulcombe initially suffered a tendon injury following his Melbourne Cup run, which sidelined him for 18 months. After returning to training, he encountered another setback when the issue reoccurred following two barrier trials in April last year.
