Black Heart Bart continued his wonderful run under Darren Weir with a Memsie Stakes (1400m) win on Saturday at Caulfield and that was the clear highlight. Who got the pass marks? Find out down below:

FOLLOW:

Rosehill

Race Two Number 1 Shards (3rd):

Blew out big time in betting and though he didn’t win, I thought his effort was pretty good. I think they wanted to roll forward but that couldn’t eventuate. I thought his effort with the weight on the wet track was a definite pass mark and a win isn’t far away.

Race Four Number 1 Ocean Grand (8th):

Probably should have won had he got a clear crack at them. Looked to be bolting when about to take the gap but it closed up and from that point on he was never a threat, but if he did get that split, he would have strongly challenged the winner. Firmer surface in a similar race next start and he’ll be winning.

Race Six Number 2 His Majesty (5th):

Run of the day for me. Had to lump 61.5kg on the testing track and had to stick to the inside. Had no right to finish as close as he did yet was only a length off the winner on the line. There is a Stakes race in him for sure.

Race Seven Number 10 Impending (3rd):

Lovely return from this potential Group l winner. Had a nice sit just off the speed and looked as if he was going to threaten but he couldn’t quite get the clear gap to build up momentum and when he did, the race was all over, but he is ticking over very nicely. He’ll be a force in the Golden Rose.

Caulfield

Race Four Number 19 Chase The Horizon (6th):

Huge in defeat IMO. Flopped out of the gates to be near last in the run and was serving drinks at the bar on the turn he was that wide. Did a great job to finish as close as he did and a win is near.

Race Seven Number 9 Tarzino (8th):

Like most at the back, was just run off his legs but he warmed up beautifully late. History says that Caulfield/Melbourne Cup winners come through this race and Tarzino certainly can win one of them. Excellent return.

Caulfield

Race Three Number 3 All Cerise (13th):

She has looked sharp at the jump outs, but hasn’t produced it on race day this time in. Could be ready to be a mum.

Race Seven Number 1 Prince Of Penzance (11th):

He has had his time in the spotlight. Until Michelle is back on, he’ll remain in the shadows. She rides the horse very well and the record backs that up.

Hastings Track:

I thought I travelled back in time to watch Derby Day at Flemington last year. First major day of the new season in NZ and that track was on the verge of being pathetic.

The Postman Award Goes To:

Caulfield Race Five Number 4 Redzel (1st)- Mark Zahra:

A man riding very well at the moment. Seized the initiative when the horse jumped brilliantly. Carved over to lead comfortably and he knew he was on a fit horse, so he rolled the dice and let it roll along, hoping to pinch it, and he did. Pretty watch if you backed him.

Look Away Now:

Rosehill Race Four Number 12 Beside You (7th)- Serg Lisnyy:

Gave it a beaut to win last start…but this ride wasn’t flash. On a day where the fence was quicksand, he elected to hug it. No surprise to see her not pick up the leader/winner and weakening out of contention. She is a quality filly who has the potential to be a Country Championship contender in the Autumn. I’ll also mentioned Emily Finnegan for her slaughter job of Miss Gunpowder, as well as Clare Lindop, who has had 37 rides this season, 17 of those at $10 or under, for just one win. Her ride on My Sanctuary sums up her season so far.
