Trainer Dominic Sutton will put the horse first before personal ambition as Victoria’s richest two-year-old race looms.
Sutton has Sword Of Legacy among the 81 youngsters still in contention for the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on February 22.
But Sutton, who runs dual yards at Ballarat and Flemington, said there was still a lot of water to go under the bridge before a start for Sword Of Legacy is considered for a Blue Diamond start.
Sword Of Legacy will line-up for her second start when she runs in the Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (1000m) at Sandown on Saturday.
Success would guarantee the filly a start in the Blue Diamond, but Sutton is a realist, a lot can change in the ensuing three weeks.
“She is still in the Blue Diamond, but we’ll get through Saturday first before we make any decisions about that race,” Sutton said.
Sword Of Legacy, a daughter of Too Darn Hot, made her debut at Flemington on January 18, finishing second to Cavalry Girl.
It was a performance that pleased Sutton who noted Sword Of Legacy had made significant improvement from that outing.
“She’s always been a very natural filly,” Sutton said.
“She’s always done everything of what we have asked, and she has done it quite naturally.
“She did a nice piece of work on Monday and seemed to come through that well.”
With the scratching of Tempted from Saturday’s race, Sword Of Legacy will jump from barrier eight in the nine-horse field.
Sutton is unconcerned by the draw, noting Damian Lane had ridden the filly under race conditions previously and will have learned a lot from that exposure.
“The draw is a little bit awkward, but it is a 1000-metre race,” Sutton said.
“There’s a nice, long run home and we’ve got a very good jockey on board, so he’ll make the right decision as he has had a feel of her on race day.
“She looks a nice filly and should run well.”
