Matt Cumani’s promising young stayer Kingofwallstreet is steadily recovering from a significant tendon injury that interrupted his path to the Autumn Carnival.
The son of Dundeel had emerged as a serious talent last spring, winning the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) before finishing fourth in the prestigious Group 1 Victoria Derby (2500m). His trajectory towards autumn staying events was cut short due to the untimely injury.
“He’s getting there, it’s a very long process,” Cumani said.
“We’re doing the rehab on him at the moment, he’s probably got another few months and then he’ll go out to the paddock and see out the 12 months.
“We’ve just got to keep our fingers crossed, he’s probably 50-50 as to whether it holds or not but hopefully it does.”
Cumani explained that the colt’s rehab has reached the treadmill phase, part of a carefully structured routine to help the tendon heal under controlled load.
“At the moment he’s on the treadmill, with a tendon we like to top load the rehab, he’s been walking for the last couple of months just building up,” he said.
Kingofwallstreet has raced only four times, showing strong improvement throughout his debut season after an initial seventh-placed effort over 1400m on the Pakenham Synthetic last August.
