Dean Yendall issues apology for on air comments

Jockey Dean Yendall has expressed his regret and offered an apology for remarks he made during a post-race interview at Swan Hill on Monday.

The Group 1-winning jockey acknowledged that his comments included an “inappropriate and offensive joke” while discussing the wind and track conditions after riding the winner of the first race.

Yendall issued a statement on Tuesday morning, stating:

“I wish to express my sincere apologies for the inappropriate and offensive joke that was made during a post-race interview at Swan Hill races today. I would like to acknowledge that my words were hurtful and offensive to many, and I deeply regret the impact they had.

“I take full responsibility for my actions and understand that my comments were not only inappropriate but also completely unacceptable. I want to assure you that this does not reflect my true values or beliefs. I am committed to rectifying this situation and making amends.

“I understand that an apology alone is not enough, and actions speak louder than words. In the coming days and weeks, I will be taking the following steps:

1. First and foremost, I will apologize to my fellow jockeys and industry participants, including my sponsors and management team;

2. I will seek education and guidance to ensure that I am better informed and aware of the impact of inappropriate remarks;

3. Going forward, I will exercise better judgment and sensitivity in my public appearances and interactions; and

4. I am open to feedback from the community and will actively engage in constructive dialogue to learn from this experience.

“I understand that trust needs to be rebuilt, and I am fully committed to doing the necessary work to regain the respect and trust of those who were hurt by my actions.

“Once again, I am deeply sorry for my offensive remarks and any harm they may have caused. I am determined to make amends and ensure that such a situation does not happen again.

“Thank you for your understanding, and I hope to learn and grow from this experience.”
