Limestone has been teaching Darren Weir more about 2YO racing

Darren Weir admits he’s learning a bit more about two-year-old racing through the deeds of Limestone.

The youngster runs in the Group Two Blue Diamond Prelude for fillies at Caulfield on Saturday and will need to win for connections to pay a $55,000 late entry fee into the 2017 Blue Diamond Stakes on February 25.

Weir has bagged 17 Group One victories but is yet to have a starter in a two-year-old Group One race.

The 2015 Melbourne Cup-winning trainer is hopeful he can change that in two weeks time, but if he doesn’t it is something he’s planning for the future.

“I don’t know much about two-year-olds but it’s something we really want to get into,” Weir said.

“I never really bought two-year-old types before. I was looking at horses more for later on.

“I don’t rev them (two-year-olds) too much and we’re still doing the same systems that we’ve been doing, but now we just go a bit further with them.

“Now we get them in a bit earlier, tip them out and have lots of little preps.”

Weir said the prize money for the two-year-olds was too good to bypass and he wants to become a bigger player.

After running second on debut behind Catchy at Moonee Valley in December, Limestone has gone on to victories at Flemington and in the fillies division of the Blue Diamond Preview at Caulfield.

On Saturday Limestone ($3) fronts up against Catchy, the $2.70 favourite.

After her last-start win at Caulfield, Weir switched Limestone to his Warrnambool base for some beach work before a track gallop on Tuesday morning.

“She’s fit and well,” he said.

“She came back to Ballarat after her gallop on Tuesday and she’s in really good order.”
