Racing Victoria will continue to asses their decision to allow Darren Weir-trained horses to race as the investigation into the champion trainer continues.
Speaking on RSN927’s Racing Pulse on Thursday, Racing Victoria’s integrity chief Jamie Stier assured listeners that the situation would continue to be assessed “as more information becomes available”.
“I think it will progress further, there’s obviously an ongoing investigation and that’s why we have to be cautious as to how we approach matters and the information we divulge,” Stier said.
“We won’t be sitting on our hands I can assure everybody of that, we’ll be making the appropriate steps as soon as we’re able to.”
Victoria Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Paterson said on Wednesday that there may be footage of taser-like devices, known as “jiggers”, being used in the public arena and asked for people with information to come forward.
“For the use of a jigger the rule currently provides for a two-year penalty, for possessing a jigger there is currently no minimum penalty,” Stier said.
“The care of our horses, their well-being has to be paramount. It’s on that basis that racing progresses.”
“There is absolutely no place in horse racing for the use of electrical apparatus’ on our horses.”
