Damian Lane, a top jockey, has been suspended for eight meetings due to a careless riding charge incurred during his ride on So Glamorous in the Group 3 Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m) at Sandown on Saturday. Lane pleaded guilty to the charge and will miss the upcoming Lightning Stakes meeting at Flemington on Saturday week after he decided to defer the suspension to ride in next Saturdayโs Group 1 Orr Stakes at Caulfield before serving the ban.
Lane is not the only high-profile jockey set to miss the Lightning Stakes. Craig Williams and Jamie Mott were also suspended for careless riding at Pakenham on Thursday night, ruling them out of the Flemington sprint feature. Additionally, apprentice jockey Ryan Houston received an eight-meeting suspension for careless riding aboard Sassy Boom in the final race at Sandown.
Veteran jockey Dean Yendall was also suspended for eight meetings after being found guilty of striking his mount, Name Dropper, 10 times before the 100-metre mark during a race. Yendall was fined $1,500 in addition to the suspension.
These suspensions will significantly impact the jockey lineup for the upcoming major racing events, including the Lightning Stakes.
