Cox Plate 2026: Field given green light

All 12 runners in Saturday’s $6 million Cox Plate (2040m) have been cleared to race after Racing Victoria completed its pre-race veterinary inspections.

The final two horses requiring clearance, Ceolwulf and Saint George, both passed their examinations on Friday morning, ensuring a full field for the weight-for-age feature at Flemington.

Joseph Pride’s Ceolwulf underwent his inspection after arriving in Melbourne from Sydney and was deemed suitable to race.

The Ciaron Maher-trained Saint George also received the all-clear after failing his initial examination on Thursday.

Saint George had been presented without shoes for that inspection, with veterinarians identifying a change in his gait.

He was re-examined with shoes on Friday morning and passed fit to take his place in the Group 1 contest.

The clearance is particularly important for Saint George, who is backing up just seven days after finishing runner-up behind Kingswood in the Caulfield Cup.

Racing Victoria confirmed that the remaining 10 Cox Plate acceptors had all passed their veterinary inspections on Thursday.

Saturday’s Cox Plate will be run at Flemington for the first time in the race’s history, with Moonee Valley unavailable due to its redevelopment.

The $6 million feature is scheduled to jump at 5.10pm AEDT.
