Charlotte Littlefield’s rising filly Concord Connie has announced herself as a potential star after a dominant six-length victory in a 1400m BM70 for three-year-old fillies at Flemington on Saturday.
The daughter of Contributer was the standout performer of the meeting, producing a blistering finish that included the fastest final 200m sectional of the day at 11.24 seconds.
Form analyst Daniel Gately was quick to label the performance as top-class when speaking on SEN’s Giddy Up.
“My first thought was – ‘that’s a Group 1 winner’,” Gately said.
“That’s too good an effort to not be a Group 1 horse.
“To win by six (lengths) after spotting them eight (lengths) adds merit to the performance.
“If she’s not Group 1 competitive, I’d be surprised.”
Racing.com analyst Clint Hutchison echoed the sentiment, describing the win as one of the best seen across the country.
“What a win, it was one of the wins of the whole day anywhere around the country,” he said.
“It was exceptional.
“Her late sectionals were off the charts.”
Gately compared the performance to that of Chris Waller-trained Espiona, who also stamped her class at Flemington as a three-year-old before progressing to Group 1 success.
“My brain went straight to Espiona. Remember when she won that race at Flemington and we thought she would be a Group 1 horse? It turns out she was, she went on to win a Group 1,” he said.
Trainer Charlotte Littlefield confirmed the filly is likely to have one more run this preparation before being set for a spring campaign.
“We’ve got a perfect carnival coming up in spring time to aim her for those bigger, loftier races,” Littlefield said.
“We could get ahead of ourselves and head up to Brisbane for a Winx Guineas, but that would be doing the wrong thing by the horse… she’s quite sensitive and she’s still developing.
“The perfect option would be to take her back to Flemington in three weeks – there’s another 1400-metre race against the boys, and I think that will be right up her alley. We can build her confidence then give her a break and bring her back for the spring and let her rip.”
