Rising star Jaminzah goes into the last at Randwick a $51 chance after 2017 saw him win 4 races, scoring back-to-back victories at Flemington in August. Trained by Chris Waller, the gelding by Master Of Design will be looking to bounce back strongly after an anti-climactic end to his spring campaign.
With a record of 5 wins and 3 minor places from 15 starts, the outsider is certainly far from disgraced in his career to date, returning this Saturday in the Mostyn Copper Group benchmark 85 over 1200m. Without doubt not out of his depth, Jaminzah’s last win came in a benchmark 80 where he beat the smart Godolphin runner Peacock, after victories in benchmark 70 and benchmark 84 company at Flemington.
The top-weight will be looking to improve on his first up record, placed in 2 of 2 to date where he will be primed for a second-up win, currently undefeated in both runs second-up from a spell.
It will be a quite a big step back in distance however, with his last 2 runs being over a mile plus and winning over 1700m in August. Somewhat of a sectional star, Jaminzah’s most impressive victories have been strong swooping runs from deep in the field. His time of 34.36 for the final 600 over the mile in fact, is very similar to others in the field over 1000-1100m distances.
It is the 2nd go over the 1200m trip for Chris Waller’s galloper, coming from 9th to run 2nd of 12 when first up at Geelong last year on a soft 6. Jaminzah has drawn barrier 9 in a field of 15 with apprentice Lee Magorrian to ride.
