Star New Zealand mare Probabeel has been retired after suffering a suspensory ligament injury to her off foreleg.
Cambridge Stud, which raced the Jamie Richards-trained five-year-old, confirmed the retirement via a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
“While we are both saddened at the news, we are eternally grateful for the unique role that Probabeel has played for Cambridge Stud and our family for the past four years,” Cambridge’s Brendan and Jo Lindsay said.
“She came on the scene at the beginning of our time at Cambridge and has been a constant flag bearer for everyone.
“We are sad that it has come to an end but look forward to getting her home and to racing her progeny over the next ten years.”
Probabeel, a daughter of Savabeel and the Pins mare Far Fetched who was a $380,000 purchase at Karaka, had her first four starts in New Zealand, for three wins, but had just two of her subsequent 25 starts in her homeland.
Thirteen of her 25 starts in Australia were at Group 1 level for four wins; the Surround Stakes (1400m) and Epsom Handicap (1600m) in 2020 and last year’s Futurity Stakes (1400m) and The Might And Power (2000m) and Caulfield.
In all, her 29 starts generated 13 wins and eight placings for $4,358,978 in stakes.
News of her retirement came less than an hour after she was set to be confirmed as one of the top 10 vote-getters in this year’s All-Star Mile, with Racing Victoria forced to delay the make-up of this year’s field for the $5 million event at Flemington on March 19.
