The Caulfield Stakes, also known recently as the Yalumba Stakes, is one of the most anticipated Group 1 events on the Australian thoroughbred racing calendar each year. Hosted each year on Caulfield Guineas Day during the opening of the Caulfield Cup Racing Carnival, this race has a long history in Australian racing. The first Caulfield Stakes was hosted way back to 1886, with some of the most famous names in Australian racing associated with this event over time.
Over its long history, ten horses have managed to win the Caulfield Stakes more than once, including Lonhro in 2003 and 2002; Lord in 1960, 1959, and 1958; Winfreux in 1967, 1966, and 1965; Eurythmic in 1922, 1921, and 1920; and Wakeful in 1902 and 1901. Other famous winners include Descarado in 2011, Sky Heights in 2000, Rough Habit in 1994, and Hyperno in 1980.

Winners of the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double include Rising Fast in 1954, Comic Court in 1950, and Mentor in 1888. The famous Tommy Smith is also often associated with this great race, having won the Caulfield Stakes an amazing seven times over the years.
