The Caulfield Stakes, also known recently as the Yalumba Stakes, is one of the most anticipated Group 1 events on the Australian thoroughbred racing calendar each year. Hosted each year on Caulfield Guineas Day during the opening of the Caulfield Cup Racing Carnival, this race has a long history in Australian racing. The first Caulfield Stakes was hosted way back to 1886, with some of the most famous names in Australian racing associated with this event over time.

Over its long history, ten horses have managed to win the Caulfield Stakes more than once, including Lonhro in 2003 and 2002; Lord in 1960, 1959, and 1958; Winfreux in 1967, 1966, and 1965; Eurythmic in 1922, 1921, and 1920; and Wakeful in 1902 and 1901. Other famous winners include Descarado in 2011, Sky Heights in 2000, Rough Habit in 1994, and Hyperno in 1980.

Some of the notable horses to have won the Caulfield Stakes and Caulfield Cup double include Sydeston in 1990, Tristarc in 1985, Mighty Kingdom in 1979, How Now in 1976, Gay Icarus in 1971, Sometime in 1963, Redcraze in 1956, Rising Fast in 1954, Peshewar in 1952, Columnist in 1947, Tranquil Star in 1942, Amounis in 1930, Manfred in 1926, and Eurythmic in 1920.

Winners of the Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate double include Ocean Park in 2012, So you Think in 2010, Northerly in 2001, Might and Power in 1998, Almaraad in 1989, Bonecrusher in 1986, Kingston Town in 1982 and 1981, Family Of Man in 1977, Gunsynd in 1972, Rising Fast in 1954, Amana in 1943, Ajax in 1938, Young Idea in 1936, and Tranquil Star in 1942.

Winners of the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup double include Rising Fast in 1954, Comic Court in 1950, and Mentor in 1888. The famous Tommy Smith is also often associated with this great race, having won the Caulfield Stakes an amazing seven times over the years. His victories include Alibhai in 1984, Kingston Town in 1982 and 1981, Mighty Kingdom in 1979, Zambari in 1975, Gunsynd in 1972, and Redcraze in 1956.
