Adelaide trainer Phillip Stokes will weigh up the options but is leaning to sending two-year-old colt Chicago Typewriter to Melbourne for a crack at the Group Three Chairman’s Stakes at Caulfield.

Stokes has also accepted for Chicago Typewriter in a race at Morphettville on Saturday but the colt has drawn the widest barrier in the field of 11.

Chicago Typewriter has gate three of nine in the Chairman’s Stakes (1000m).

“It’s probably more than likely but I just have to have a look at what it looks like in Adelaide,” Stokes said.

“I’d say we’ll give him his chance at Caulfield.

“We got beaten by a bit of a smart one the other day in Adelaide, we think.

“He’s still holding his form and hasn’t gone backwards from his last run. He probably deserves a crack at something like that.”

Chicago Typewriter led all the way to win on debut at Gawler over 1100m on December 23 before finishing a half-length second to Lindsay Park’s debutante Enbihaar over 1000m on the Morphettville Parks track at his second start on January 20.

Saturday’s performance looms as a likely test for Chicago Typewriter with a view to a possible Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m) start.

“He’s a jump and run sort of horse,” Stokes said.

“He’s a ready-made two-year-old and he’s doing all the right things at this stage.”

Chicago Typewriter is one of two Stokes-trained two-year-olds still among the Blue Diamond nominations along with More Than Exceed who is scheduled to run in Adelaide on Saturday.

The Chairman’s Stakes field includes dual stakes placegetter Encryption from the Godolphin stable.

The Tony McEvoy-trained colt Logan River and the Lindsay Park-trained filly Ennis Hill will both have blinkers on for the first time.

Stokes also has four-year-old Trogir in Saturday’s John Moule Handicap (1400m) at Caulfield and was pleased with barrier three in the field of 15.

Trogir won at Caulfield two starts ago before being chased down late to finish second to The Avenger at the same track last start after covering ground from a wide draw.

“He didn’t draw very well the other day so that draw gives him his chance,” Stokes said.

“He’s in career best form and racing well so he’ll definitely go over.”
