A runner in the 2016 Caulfield Cup has been scratched from the field which has opened a spot for first emergency De Little Engine to gain a spot in the field.
NZ mare Fanatic who was a $151 chance in Caulfield Cup odds has been scratched from the race due to an infection in her leg caused by a spider bite.
Co trainer Debby Sweeney told racingnews.co.nz that her dad called her from Melbourne saying there was a bit mark on the horses leg and it was swollen and tender.
“Dad rang me and they seem to think the mare has been bitten by a spider – there’s a puncture wound there and her leg was swollen and tender,” Sweeney said.
“Just in case, she has been scanned but nothing else has showed up. It’s the last thing you would ever expect to happen.”
