Carleen Hefel, Melbourne’s reigning champion apprentice jockey, looks to extend her remarkable 2023 success into the new year.
Currently among the top 10 in the metropolitan premiership standings, Hefel attributes her career growth to enhanced skills and quicker decision-making in races.
“My skillset’s just improved, my strength I think has improved, just seeing things more quickly in races, it’s all just coming a bit more easier now,” she said on Racing.com’s Raceday Live.
Her dedication is evident in her rigorous daily routine, starting between 3.30 and 4am for trackwork, followed by frequent racing commitments, often six days a week.
Despite the intensity, Hefel remains committed, balancing her apprentice schedule with regular travel between racing venues.
Highlighting her 2023 achievements, Hefel cherishes winning her first group race on Sigh, the Country Cup Final on Claidheamh Mor, and clinching the premiership.
These accomplishments set a strong foundation for her aspirations in the coming racing season.
