A windy day in Sydney on the eve of the Canterbury meeting will ensure racing goes ahead in NSW for the first time in three days.
Goulburn on Monday and Casino and Bathurst on Tuesday have been lost because of wet weather.
Canterbury is acknowledged as Sydney’s best wet weather surface and on Tuesday the track was a heavy 8 with hopes it will be further improved on race day.
That is good news for trainer Gerald Ryan who has two-year-old debutant Tango Rain in the first race on Wednesday.
The colt won a barrier trial on June 10 on a soft Rosehill track but his trainer doesn’t want it too wet.
“He trialled really nicely and although it was a soft track, I’m not sure about his ability on a really wet track,” Ryan said.
“He is a really nice colt who had a couple of trials in his first preparation with the stable but we turned him out without racing him.”
Tango Rain finished third in his first trial in December behind subsequent Golden Slipper winner Capitalist and the Ryan-trained Who Said It’s Easy, a winner at Gosford last week and entered for Randwick on Saturday.
Tango Rain is on the third line of betting at $7.50 with Niccolance the $2.10 favourite.
But co-trainer Paul Snowden said Niccolance could miss Canterbury if the track was too wet.
“We also have him in a Kembla on Saturday so we will just monitor the track,” Snowden said.
“He hasn’t won yet so we want to get him started on a good note.”
Niccolance finished second to his stablemate Capitalist in the Wyong Magic Millions in December and fourth to him again in the $2 million Magic Millions at the Gold Coast in January.
Ryan also has Storm System and Thorsborne in at Canterbury but the latter is also subject to track conditions.
