Two NT jockeys remain in hospital 18 days after they were involved in a three-horse fall in Darwin, with veteran jockey Brendan Sweeney still in an induced coma.
Kevin Ring of the Australian Jockeys’ Association said on Wednesday that 51-year-old jockey Sweeney had recently undergone further surgery to aid his breathing while fellow rider Kim Gladwin had had to be readmitted to hospital for more surgery.
“Brendan Sweeney has had a tracheotomy and they are hoping he can breathe on his own properly and then they will bring him out of the induced coma,” Kevin Ring of the Australian Jockeys’ Association said.
“Kim Gladwin has had a bit of a setback. He ended up with some fluid around the heart and had to be operated on yesterday.”
Sweeney and Gladwin were involved in a three-horse fall at Darwin on June 26th. Sweeney suffered bleeding to the brain, a punctured lung and broken ribs, while Gladwin suffered a fractured shoulder and rib as well as a punctured lung.
Follow jockey Jarrod Todd, who was also involved in the fall will return to race riding today, where he has three rides at the Darwin meeting.
