Josh Parr who rode the favourite EDISON (Fastnet Rock-A Million Tears) at Rosehill was shocked, well pleasantly surprised anyway that his mount won.
And if he was shocked, rival jockey Jason Collett was dumbfounded to the point of cursing as went to the line.
This was all because Edison, who had reached the front at the 300m was completely bypassed by the eventual runner-up, Collett’s mount ENCHANTED HEART (Shamus Award-Shattered Heart) a stride or two later.
So superior was her turn-of-foot at the top of the lane, she got about a length clear but Edison fought back liked a caged lion.
“Strange old race but gee this boy showed his heart and toughness and fitness because he just kept sticking it to her and wore her down.
“At Newcastle when he won he showed a dazzling turn-of-foot that day but not today and she just went past him very easily. I thought I was racing for 2nd at that point. And Jason must have too because he was muttering as we crossed the line after my horse fought back.”
The win by the ever-improving Edison has earned him a trip to the Gold Coast next month for a $1million Magic Millions Cup.
“He is a Magic Millions horse and after that he deserves a crack at a big race now,” claimed his trainer Bjorn Baker.
Back in 3rd was BIGBOYROY (Dissident-Follonica) who is must be said was unlucky. Edison won by a head from the mare but he was only a head further back in third and was held up, and disappointed once the straightened looking for a run. When clear he did grind home impressively.
But honours to the victor who now has raced 16 times for 5 wins and 5 minors earning $417,000 for his connections.
Edison cost $310,000 at the 2018 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sale.
