New Zealand’s top hurdler, Berry The Cash, could make his Australian debut at Warrnambool’s May Racing Carnival, with trainer Mark Oulaghan seriously considering the move for the talented gelding.
The nine-year-old son of Jakkalberry is fresh off seven consecutive wins, including a dominant victory in the Grand National Hurdles last year. Now, after a spell, Oulaghan is aiming to test him against Australia’s best hurdlers.
Berry The Cash recently finished third in a 1400-metre trial at Foxton and will make his flat racing return at Hawera on Wednesday.
While Oulaghan doesnβt expect him to feature in the finish just yet, he hopes his early performances will justify a trip across the Tasman.
“He’s in pretty good order, and we’ll see how he goes over the next couple of starts,” Oulaghan said.
Meanwhile, Oulaghan’s star jumper West Coast will remain in New Zealand, aiming for his fourth consecutive Grand National Steeplechase.
