Nine months after being sidelined by a concussion, leading South Australian jockey Barend Vorster is starting to see improvement.
Since a head injury at Morphettville in February, Vorster has struggled with headaches and blurred vision.
The 2021/2022 John Letts medal winner is hopeful of a return to racing next year, and recent progress has made him optimistic.
Speaking to RadioTAB, Vorster noted that his condition has significantly improved in the last two months.
He is following his doctors’ advice to regain full physical health before considering a return to horse riding.
He finds inspiration in champion jockey Michael Rodd, who recently returned to winning form after a long battle with post-concussion syndrome.
Vorster’s recovery has been challenging, not only physically but also psychologically, as he felt disconnected from the sport he loves.
Regular neuro-physio sessions have been beneficial, allowing him to resume light jogging with less frequent headaches and dizziness.
Although still dealing with neck issues, Vorster is pleased with his overall progress and is gradually returning to more activities, aiming for a full recovery by early 2024.
