‘King Diamond’ has been issued with a re-handicap for the Adelaide Cup following his dominant win in Saturday’s Roy Higgins Quality at Flemington.
Prepared by Mark Kavanagh at Flemington, King Diamond carried 58.5kg and still proved too tough for another Adelaide Cup hopeful ‘Vesper’, coming from the rear of the field to score by over a length.
It was his first try beyond 2000m and the win with the big weight secured his place atop Adelaide Cup betting charts – tightening to $4.80 with most agencies following the win.
King Diamond had 53.5kg in the Adelaide Cup but South Australian chief handicapper Craig Kutcher saw enough in the win on Saturday to penalise the four year old 1kg, taking his Cup weight to 54.5kg.
The gelding has won four of his last five runs and will meet another in-form stayer, ‘Guyno’, in the feature race.
Guyno won the Lord Reims over 2600m on Saturday but cannot be penalised for his win. The Perth warhorse has 55.5kg in the cup and is the $7.00 second favourite.
