Nominations have been taken for Sydney’s premier open staying race, the $2.25 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m).
76 horses are in the running for The BMW, to be run at Rosehill on Golden Slipper day, April 2.
Headlining the nominations are 2009 Melbourne Cup winner Shocking, 2010 Melbourne Cup runner up Maluckyday, 2010 Caulfield Cup winner Descarado and 2010 Epsom Derby runner up At First Sight.
There is also strong representation from the three year olds, with 10 nominated.
Among them are Caulfield Guineas winner Anacheeva, Victoria Derby runner up Praecido, emerging New Zealand stayer He’s Remarkable and the first son of Makybe Diva, Rockstardom.
Surprisingly, Caulfield Cup runner up Harris Tweed is not amongst nominations, despite co-trainer Bjorn Baker telling the New Zealand Herald this morning that it would be his main aim.
Legendary trainer Bart Cummings has six nominations, including comeback galloper Roman Emperor.
The surprise is in the depth of nominations from leviathan owner Lloyd Williams.
Williams tends to avoid the Sydney autumn carnival as he prefers horses to peak once a year, during the Melbourne spring carnival.
However, this year he has nominated nine horses, including stable stars Zipping and Linton.
Last Saturday’s Group 1 Thorndon Mile (1600m) winner Booming is also amongst nominations.
