Watch: Jockey escapes serious injury in frightening fall

American-based jockey Edgard Zayas has escaped serious injury after a dramatic fall at Belmont overnight.

The incident occurred shortly after the start of the eighth race when Zayas was dislodged from his mount Glint in alarming fashion.

Jumping from the outside barrier, Zayas initially attempted to press forward but, when unable to cross, he tried to restrain his mount, which resulted in Glint clipping heels and nearly falling.

The contact launched Zayas into the air before he hit the track heavily, sparking immediate concern.

Fortunately, both horse and rider avoided major injury, with In Front Racing Stables confirming Zayas suffered only minor damage.

β€œEdgard Zayas came out with just a small cut on his face, did not go to hospital. Glint seems fine,” the stable posted on X.

Reports indicated Zayas was able to walk away from the incident under his own power and remained in good spirits following the fall.

Despite the lucky escape, officials stood the rider down for the remainder of the meeting as a precaution.

The incident serves as a reminder of the ever-present risks faced by jockeys in racing, even when outcomes are far less severe than they initially appear.
