Owners and horse names: a combination so intriguing it fascinates many.
Me included.
They say dog owners end up looking like their dogs, which may be true.
I’m rather wiry, I’ve been a runner forever and I’ve owned three pet greyhounds during the course of my life. Go figure.
But race horse names and their owners? Different animal altogether…or are they? They do seem to somehow be melded.
Now, before you read on, I’m aware I need to be VERY careful with this story, and so that no-one is offended at all – I’m not insinuating anything, nor am I in any way saying any potential conclusions or coincidences are related.
Read on.
I’m just pointing out that somewhere on that mythical universal platform where dogs and owners and names and owners exist, that which is beyond all our understanding, lurks a controller of things so magical, or cynical, it could be considered scary.
Ok, enough of the build up.
In race 1 at Flemington on Saturday is a filly who has had one start. On that day, at stakes level, she was handy to the bend and folded up to run 9th. This time may be different.
Now, bear with me, for this is where I bring in the recent news, and that filly together…..and again no commentary here, just the facts and nothing but the facts.
Cardinal George Pell has been found guilty in the County Court of child sex offences and is awaiting his sentencing hearing, which is set down for next Wednesday.
Pell served as the head of the Vatican’s secretariat for the Economy and was also a member of the pope’s council of cardinal advisors, making him the highest-ranking Catholic prelate to be convicted on charges of sexual abuse.
In the Bible, it says that when you become a pastor or minister, or Cardinal, you forfeit the right for your sin not to be known.
This is because you are held to a higher standard by God.
The warning in the book of James to ministers who fall is sobering, “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will have greater strictness of judgement.” (3:1).
So with all that in mind, we turn back to this horse in the first at Flemington.
She is owned in part by a Mr G. Pell. I have no idea if this is the same George Pell or even any relation to Cardinal Pell.
I don’t even know if this Mr G. Pell is even called George!
Plus, he might not even be a Christian.
Whose to say or judge?
But, what I do know is that this filly in the first, owned in part by Mr G. Pell is named….JUDGEMENT.
You can just see the universe at work here right now.
Can she win this race? Probably not.
The unbeaten Yulong Savings looks extra smart.
But I’m sure if Mr G. Pell prays hard enough, she can run a bit of a race at big odds.
