In our continuing series of quick questions with racing personalities, we find out a bit more about trainer Grahame Begg.
What is your first racing memory?
I was at the AJC Derby at Randwick when Divide And Rule won, trained by my father and ridden by Darby McCarthy.
Who is your favourite horse and why?
My favourite horse is All Silent because of the story behind him going to Hong Kong and being sent back to Australia and becoming a multiple Group 1 winner.
Who is the best horse you’ve been involved with?
Emancipation without a doubt. Seven time Group One winner with a record of 19 wins.
And the best horse you have seen?
Makybe Diva, I don’t think we will ever see another win three Melbourne Cups, a Cox Plate and other multiple Group Ones.
Who is your ‘what if’ horse?
There has probably been quite a lot but I move on, and forget about it and go onto the next sale.
Who do you admire most in racing?
I would say my father Neville Begg.
What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?
All the states coming together would be one and get the debacle of the pattern committee sorted for the sake of the industry as a whole.
What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?
Watching all kinds of sports, AFL, NRL, cycling, Formula One, cricket etc.
What is your favourite T.V show/movie/book?
I don’t have time to read books, I like a lot of Netflix series and docos.
What slogan summarises your outlook on life?
Expect the unexpected.
Favourite food?
Asian hands down.
Favourite racecourse?
Can’t split Flemington and Randwick.
If you weren’t a racehorse trainer what would you be doing?
Maybe a bloodstock agent.
