In recovery mode from injury, star jockey Blake Shinn took time to answer a few of our Quick Questions…
What is your first racing memory?
Vintage Crop winning the 1993 Melbourne Cup.
Who is your favourite horse and why?
Happy Clapper. I adored him and so did the fans because of his never say die attitude.
Who is the best horse you’ve ridden?
So You Think is the best horse I’ve thrown a leg over albeit in 2 jump-outs.
And the best horse you have seen?
Winx. I tried to find a way to beat her many times. Although coming close, Winx always found a way to win.
Who do you admire most in racing?
Gai Waterhouse. She’s a pioneer for women in racing. A legendary trainer who is always willing to help and inspire the next generation.
What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?
A better rating system for the horses. I believe horses here in Melbourne don’t drop quick enough when beaten, making it difficult for them to win in a preparation.
What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced in racing?
My pants falling down in a race at Canterbury.
What is your favourite pastime outside of racing?
Having a cigar and whisky while relaxing with friends.
What is your favourite movie/book?
Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey is one of my favourite books. Moneyball is a movie I could watch over and over again.
What slogan summarises your outlook on life?
Hard work beats talent.
Favourite food?
Red frogs or killer pythons.
Favourite racecourse?
Flemington.
If you weren’t a jockey what would you be doing?
I have a plan when I stop riding, I will become a trainer.
What do you think your best ride was?
Russian Emperor in the Hong Kong Cup beating the champ Golden Sixty. Antino in the Toorak. Damask Rose in the NZB Kiwi.
And one where you didn’t get it quite right?!
Tempted in the Golden Slipper. The run didn’t open when I anticipated. One that got away.
What’s the worst spray you’ve had from a trainer?
As an apprentice getting beaten in the 2004 Terang Cup riding a horse called Winkler for my stepdad Lee Hope. Going out for the next race he said he might as well have left this at f…g home. Thankfully I rode her well and she won. Lee could give an almighty bake!
