A respected trainer of staying types and jumpers, the Warrnambool based Aaron Purcell – who had the sire of Half Yours (St Jean) in his care – was again in great form at the recent May carnival with The Instigator so tough winning the coveted Grand Annual.
Do you come from a racing family?
Yes, on my dad’s side. My father, grandfather and uncles were all trainers, owners and breeders on a small scale.
What is your first racing memory?
Going to Caulfield as a kid and my grandparents horse won; out for dinner at the Mernda Pub to celebrate.
Who is your favourite horse and why?
All Black Symphony, my first winner; a very difficult mare!
Who is the best horse you’ve been involved with?
Merchant Navy.
And the best horse you have seen?
Black Caviar.
Do you have any promising young horses for racing fans to look out for?
Rose Of Lima by St Jean.
Who do you admire most in racing?
When I was younger I looked up to George Hanlon and Jim Houlahan.
Who is your ‘what if’ horse?
St Jean – injury prevented him racing when he was being aimed at the Caulfield Cup.
What is one change/improvement you’d love to see in racing?
Better distribution of funds across all levels of racing.
What’s the funniest moment you’ve experienced in racing?

Both Grand Annual wins.

To see Phar Lap racing.
