It’s the one week of the year where just about every Australian will have a flutter at Flemington, whether it be a newbie who just finished high school, right up to the elder statesmen of the human race who are on their last legs aka Geoffrey Edelstein. Whatever your age and whatever your punting experience, Justhorseracing has piled together the ten things to look out for during Cup Week.

More: Melbourne Cup 2015 Tips and News

1. There Will Be A Rags-To-Riches Story:

You can spend millions of dollars looking for the perfect horse, or you can just look for a horse with unfashionable breeding with little known owners and a little known trainer with a little known jockey, which was the case in the 2007 Emirates Stakes when Nikita Beriman steered 100/1 outsider Tears I Cry to one of the great upset wins in Cup Week history when taking out the Group l. Trained by Ciaron Maher and owned by Anne McGrath. It is still IMO one of the best reactions ever on a race track.

2. Gai Waterhouse Pumping Up Her Runners:

It just wouldn’t be a normal day if Gai didn’t declare one of her runners for a meeting, and she can certainly fire up for Cup Week. Mind you, she has plenty of credits in the bank to do whatever she wants, and she is without doubt the best thing for racing in terms of advertising and the brand. Fiorente’s Melbourne Cup win in 2013 was the pinnacle for the Queen of the Turf.

3. 18 Year Old Girls Will Be Done By Race Six:

It just wouldn’t be Cup Week without seeing the youngins passed out on the Flemington lawn with their heels off. But words don’t really need to be said. I’ll leave it to Family Guy to explain.

4. The Japanese:

They first came to conquer the Cup in 2005 with Eye Popper and he ran a credible race behind the great mare Makybe Diva, but the Japanese only had to wait 12 months to take out greatest race when Delta Blues and Pop Rock settled down for one of the best finishes in Cup history. And who could forget the interview afterwards between Yasunari Iwata and John Letts? Lettsy explains it down below. The Japanese could well claim the great race again on Tuesday with either Fame Game or Hokko Brave.

5. Gary Harley Will Tip Every Favourite on Muswellbrook Cup Day:

God bless the face of Sharpes Tractor Centre. It is folklore that if there are four runners under $10 in the betting, he will tip them in that exact order. So expect something similar to happen on Tuesday where it is Muswellbrook Cup Day.
