The Shannon Stakes is a Group 2 race for three year old horses and above. This event is run over a distance of 1500 metres, and has taken place since 1978. Originally a Principal Race, the Shannon Stakes became a Listed event in its second year, a Group 3 race in 1985, and a Group 2 race in 2001.

While the Shannon Stakes has been run over 1500 metres for most of its life, it was run over 1400 metres from 1979-84, and also in 2001. This race is run under handicap at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse, on the same day as the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes. The Shannon Stakes has proved to be a good form guide for events later in the season, including the Group 1 Epsom Handicap.
Some of the most well known horses who have taken out this event include Deposition in 1991, Juggler in 1996, Al Mansour in 2000, Stormhill in 2006, and Musket in 2008. The 2011 edition of the race was won by King Lionheart, who showed too much speed down the straight to win from Fast Clip in second and Lone Command in third.
