2023 Thousand Guineas Speed Map
It’s hard to find an early leader. Ersa and Vibrant Sun look the two leaders, potentially? Given they are drawn wide, I suspect they slide forward. Coeur Volante has been able to settle handy and suspect that given she is drawn well, she won’t be far away. Will Skybird be able to use the inside gate to advantage? Only time will tell.
2023 Thousand Guineas Runner Preview:
1. Kimochi: Kimochi should appreciate a rise to 1600m for Gary Portelli. She was runner up in the Flight Stakes before being freshened up. She ran on Cup Day at Flemington in the Desirable and was good from off the speed when third to Roll On High. Proven miler in the field, has runs on the board and we know how dominant #SF can be in these G1 races. Commands respect.
2. Coeur Volante: Has she been kissed on the rump with two 12/10 rides from Shinn? Yes, visually been very good in both runs back, but there is no doubting that the elite rides have certainly helped her cause. The key to her is that she will get into a lovely spot again and 1600m, you’d think is no issue. But my thinking is that she has been blessed this time in and IMO, she’s too short.
3. Skybird: Skybird…beware the unbeaten horse. This filly was a superb winner of the Fillies Classic at The Valley, where she was kissed on the rump with the run and the ride from Beau Mertens, with the inside opening right up and she was able to let down with purpose late to win and win well. She could be a jet and blow these…she can win, but do I want to back at the current odds? No. I’d want much better.
4. Arctic Glamour: Arctic Glamour must have pleased the stable to keep persisting with the prep and for mine, that is enough to say she can win. She was odds on in the Callander-Presnell three weeks ago at Randwick where she seemingly had every chance in behind but was very plain when clean behind Chrysaor. The wins prior were outstanding and they were certainly good enough to take this out.
5. Carina Queen: She hasn’t done much wrong this time in and did find the line strongly behind Skybird at The Valley. Clean jump, she can settle closer in the run and with the 1600m run under the belt, J Kah flying, she’s in with a shout.
6. Joliestar: This is the knockout and for mine, she is overs. Waller horse in a Grand Final = always dangerous. She ran on Cup Day and just found one better in Roll On High. Maps to get a perfect run just off the speed and if the breaks go her way, she can win for sure.
7. Zourion: Sat wide no cover in the race won by Coeur Volante but credit to her, she stuck on bravely for third. Likely has to do work again from a wide gate and I can’t entertain her.
8. Vivy Air: I have time for this filly. She was a real eye catcher behind Coeur Volante at this track last time, working home with real purpose after getting a mile back in the run. If she was able to settle closer, or get a drag into the race, I think she will be one of the strongest late.
9. Apache Song: She is gone. No hope.
10. Enna’s Dream: I think she has talent but nit enough to trouble these, and the break between runs concerns me.
11. Ersa: Had a suck run in the Carbine Club and just battled late. Solid, okay form, but much harder here and is drawn wide to do work. Not for me.
12. Vibrant Sun: Looked a moral last Saturday in a Geelong maiden and duly saluted. Lands on speed and will be strong you’d think…just don’t think she has the quality.
13. Quickster: Knockout hope. She was a real eye catcher without much luck in the Fillies Classic behind Skybird and keep in mind was jumping to the mile from 1200m. Has the mile run under the belt, can settle closer from the good gate…a win wouldn’t shock at all.
