A small but select field has been assembled for the Rosehill Guineas (2000m) this Saturday where Pericles is favourite in what could be a fat day for James Cummings and James McDonald.
Down below is a speed map, runner preview and $100 betting strategy for the 2023 Rosehill Guineas.
2023 Rosehill Guineas Speed Map
Elliptical should lob into a beaut spot from gate one and be forwardly placed. Matcha Latte will be on speed I think, while the likely leader is Lindermann. It’ll be interesting to see what J Mac does with Pericles, and whether he rolls the dice to find a forward spot.
2023 Rosehill Guineas Runner Preview:
1 Manzoice: Manzoice looks to be ticking along nicely towards the Derby. He resumed in the Randwick Guineas where he got a fair way out of his ground and was never really a factor but did warm to the task at the end and ran through the line well enough behind Communist. This should top him off for the Derby but he has the runs on the board and will be strong late.
2 Elliptical: To me, he seems a bit on the short side. Just a win in the CS Hayes, albeit he did cover ground. But the Australian Guineas effort was on the plain side and yes, he draws gate one, but there is a slight query on how well he is going. Happy to risk.
3 Lindermann: I think he comes right into play if this track is playing up/in. He did work to land on speed in the Randwick Guineas and battled on really well in defeat to run second to Communist. He’s racing like 2000m will suit, he should the front pretty comfortably and be hard to run down.
4 Matcha Latte: Matcha Latte, to my eye, looks a much better horse when he has room to move. He didn’t get that in the Randwick Guineas and to the eye, it was just a run, but he had genuine excuses I thought being between runners and nearer the inside. If he gets room to move this time around, he’s certainly going well enough to take this out.
5 Pericles: Pericles has the engine under the hood to prove hard to beat here. He’s had two runs back from a spell, both at Sandown. Resumed with a close up fourth in the Autumn Stakes before stepping up to 1800m in the Autumn Classic where loved the step up in distance and albeit he didn’t beat much, he gapped them and was impressive. Promised to be a good horse since day one and this prep has been all about the Guineas/Derby. Leading contender.
6 Williamsburg: He’s a nice, solid horse, that does try hard…just not sure he attacks the line of a horse that is a coming 2000m Group l winner. Good effort in the Randwick Guineas but I don’t think he is quite up to this level.
7 Brosnan: If he drew an inside gate, I could certainly entertain him. His run last Saturday in the Phar Lap was enormous and I reckon he is flying. Just not sure he can overcome the wide gate and win.
8 Ausbred Rising Sun: Ausbred Rising Sun has a few loose screws upstairs but no doubting he has the engine under the hood. Dominant win at Newcastle two back before going to the Autumn Classic and while he was never a threat I thought he found the line very well behind Pericles. The way he finds the line, 2000m is okay, and if he can settle closer in the run, he’ll run a positive race.
9 Northern Barrage: I always respect Mick Kent when he is on the road with his runners, especially when he comes to Sydney, and I reckon this horse does have talent…but not enough to beat these.
