Lightly raced 5yo Pin Your Hopes looks well placed to claim the Listed Seymour Cup this Sunday after two runs back from a spell, the most recent of which was an unlucky effort behind in-form gallopers Under The Louvre and Lucky Hussler in the Listed Tavern Stakes He progressed through the grades well last campaign, graduating from a RST 90 event at Bendigo to, at the final start of his preparation, winning a Caulfield Open handicap over a mile. The son of Pins has won each of his past runs three back from a spell and from gate eight, is drawn to get a lovely run midfield. Following a similar career path to Pin Your Hopes is Saint or Sinner, Mike Moroney’s five year olds who also contested the Tavern Stakes (9th) after being wide throughout.

1. FAT AL – L Nolen (1) 60kgs
Being first up and under 60kgs, the 8yo was only able to hold his ground first up in an Open Hcp (1500m) at Moonee Valley three weeks ago. After a similar run first up last prep, the Peter Moody trained galloper claimed the Listed Golden Mile at Bendigo from Bel Thor. Will get his chance from the inside draw.
2. TUSCAN FIRE – S Arnold (16) 58.5kgs
First up here off a twenty-one week spell and his only win fresh from seven starts, came when at 100/1 at Flemington in August of last year. Will get a long way back here from his poor draw and hard to see him improving his first up record here. Will need longer than this.
3. TANBY – D Dunn (4) 58kgs
For this first time since August 2012, the 8yo gelding will be competing in a race shorter than 1700m. He is first up off a twenty-five week spell and would think he’ll need this run and a trip of at least 2000m before he comes in for consideration.
4. MOBACO – B Rawiller (10) 57.5kgs
Overseas galloper who didn’t fire a short when making his Australian debut for Darren Weir back in last August, running an inglorious last of thirteen in an Open Hcp (1500m) behind Mourinho. Trainer has started again with the 6yo and this will be his first run since then but needs to perform a miraculous form turn-around to figure here.
5. ANOTHER PRELATE – C Robertson (3) 56.5kgs
He was ridden a treat by Robertson to score his first win in almost two years when successful in an Open Hcp (1500m) at Moonee Valley three weeks back. That backed up a solid first up effort when, at 100/1 and under 60kgs, he ran a head third to Infinite Energy in a BM 90 (1400m). Not surprisingly, the 10 year old is enjoying his races being spaced out and has shown enough this time in, that combined with his good draw, he is worthy of consideration.
6. LIGHTINTHENITE – C Symons (5) 56kgs
Settled just off midfield when having is first run in eight weeks and maintained that position in the run to the line when seventh (4.9 lengths) behind Another Prelate. It’s been almost two years to the day that this 7yo, who is onto his third trainer this year, last won a race (The David Jones Cup 2012) but he’ll strip fitter for the first up hit-out, has drawn to get the lovely run, and shown enough in the past to take a closer look at him here.
7. BEL THOR – J Mott (2) 54.5kgs
From last on the turn, he worked home as well as he could’ve first up when, under the steadier of 61kgs, he finished seventh in a BM 90 at the Hillside track, 3.9 lengths behind Hosting – who has since won again. Gets a lovely weight drop here of 6.5kgs did run second to Fat Al in the Golden Mile last prep however from gate two, from a horse that gets back, he’ll have to at the very top of his game.
8. ZABISCO – (9)
We haven’t seen this 7yo stallion from the Darren Weir yard since he won the Woodford Cup (1700m) at Warrnambool in the last days of December last year. First up record isn’t flash, the most recent events worse still and hard to see him winning this race.
9. SAINT OR SINNNER – C Schofield (17) 54kgs
Punters did their money at the jump when, as a 15/10 favourite, this Mike Moroney gelding reared at the start and never raised his supporters hopes in a BM 90 (1200m) at Morphettville. His only run since saw him battle away from a handy position to run ninth (5 lengths) to Under The Louvre and Lucky Hussler in the Listed Tavern Stakes (1400m). Strung four wins together last prep around this distance and come up against some in-form gallopers last start. If Schofield can find a spot from wide gate, he could turn out to be a saint.
10. MOTIVADO – C Newitt (13) 54kgs
Failed to finish the G2 Adelaide Cup (3200m) earlier this year and will resume here off a seventh month spell. It’s been well over a year now since this 7yo has shown form of any sign and will not bother most in this race.
11. PIN YOUR HOPES – D Lane (8) 54kgs
Held his position well first up when seventh (5.7 lengths) behind subsequent dual G1 winner Trust In A Gust before running into trouble on the turn and then being squeezed out late in the Listed Tavern Stakes (1700m), before finishing well to run seventh (3 lengths) to Under the Louvre and Lucky Hussler. Should’ve finished closer last start and third up to the mile is spot on – so his lead up form and looks as though he’ll be hard to beat.
12. MUJADALE – S Baster (14) 54kgs
Carried 60kgs when resuming with a pleasing third (0.9 lengths) of five in a Naracoorte BM 80 over an unsuitable 1100m. That run was four weeks ago now and whilst his last two second up runs have seen him finish just behind among the placings, they’ve been in easier races than this one and the draw will not help his cause.
13. OUR HAND OF FAITH – (6) 54kgs
Stuck on better than most from an on-pace position when seventh (3.6 lengths) to Late Charge in The Sofitel Stakes (1400m) before settling further back in the Listed Tavern Stakes, and finishing well to run third (0.5 length) behind Under The Louvre and Lucky Hussler. Gets to the mile for the first time in a few years but draw well help him see it out and going too well to leave out.
14. FULL HAND – (15) 54kgs
Assigned a whopping 65.5kgs for his return race at Albury where he finished third of six (1.2 lengths) in the BM 70 (1175m) just over two weeks ago. Trainer Brian Cox has successfully picked off Country Cup with this horse’s last two starts over a mile resulting in wins in the Moruya and Corowa Cups. Stable will have him ready to produce his best but the wide gate makes it hard.
15. CAPTAIN FANCYPANTS – D Moor (7) 54kgs
Ok first up over 1200m in a BM 78 when sixth of ten (2.4 lengths) behind Tennessee Lad under 61.5kgs but continued to lose ground at his following start, an Open handicap over 1700m, ultimately finishing last of fifteen and almost two lengths from the winner Kenjorwood. Won third up last prep and then ran fourth to Sweet As Bro in the Kilmore Cup (1600m) but last start has to be a concern.
16. WHITE UNIVERSE – D Smith (11) 54kgs (1st EM)
Ran better than his 100/1 price suggested he would first up, running sixth (2.5 lengths) behind Lord Di Vinci in the Ballarat BM 70 (1400m). That was a solid return but has been a while since this 7yo has been in the kind of form he’d need to be in to be winning this.
17. FAMILY PRIDE – C Parish (12) 54kgs
Hasn’t worried the winners in either of this two runs back from a spell from the tail of the field, in races of much easier grade than this, and appears to be aiming too high here.
Fat Al should lead out here from the inside draw, with Another Prelate. Pace should be moderate with a number of entries for the race, early in their campaigns and probably better suited over longer journeys. Pin Your Hopes is the one they’ll have to beat. Should’ve finished closer last start and third up over a mile sees him at his peak for this. Lightinthenite has drawn well, meets Another Prelate 2.5kgs better for their last meeting which was his first run in eight weeks. Will be fitter in a race of limited chances, will get his chance to finally return to the winner’s stall.
