Recently having ridden his 4000th career winner, Jockey Robert Thompson will look to add another winner to his amazing tally when he is legged aboard Big Money, the short-priced favourite for this Wednesday’s Ramornie Handicap at Grafton.

Thompson rode Big Money to victory in last Saturday week’s G3 Healy Stakes and punters believe the pair can repeat that performance, quickly taking his opening price of $3.20, firming the Rodney Northam trained galloper into $2.80.

Thompson rode Youthful Jack to victory in this race last year, making it his third success in the Ramornie Handicap in the past seven years after he also partnered The Jackal to back-to-back wins in 2007 and 2008.

Testarhythm is one of several horses on the next line of betting with the former Chris Waller trained galloper at $7.00 along with Territory.

Hidden Warrior ($7.50), Under the Sun ($8.00) and Mr Favulous ($8.50) are the other runners under double figure odds.

SPECIAL OFFER: $250 FREE BET on the RAMORNIE HANDICAP – Sportsbet

1. HIDDEN WARRIOR – (2) 59kgs

The 4yo had his first start for Gosford trainer Gordon Yorke a little over a month ago in the June Stakes when resuming from a seventeen week spell.

He took up a forward position in the run from a wide gate but first up, under 58kg and on a heavy track, couldn’t improve his position in the straight and finished fourth (4.2 lengths) behind the very much in-form Avoid Lightning.

Fitter here, drawn well and getting back on top of the ground also a plus. He has the credentials, despite the hefty weight, to be right in the mix here.

2. TESTARHYTHM – T Clark (3) 58kgs

Enjoyed the solid pace up front when, first up from a twenty week spell for his new trainer Benjamin Smith, the 6yo finished strongly to claim the Listed Ortensia Stakes at Scone.

He has since backed that up with a third (1.4 lengths) behind Oakfield Commands where he again hit the line in good style, making up many lengths from the back of the field.

His last start was his first for over a month and should have topped him off nicely for here. Going too well to dismiss.

3. UNDER THE SUN – P King (5) 58kgs

After finishing last of nine and then last of fifteen (beaten over eleven lengths) in the G3 Southern Cross (1200m) and Canberra National Sprint respectively, the Gai Waterhouse runner was given a spell of sixteen weeks.

He has been tuned up for this, his return to racing, with a solid winning barrier trial over 1200m just under a fortnight ago.

Fresh record is only moderate and his best performances are over trips slightly longer than this one. Will have to be at his absolute best to be winning here.

4. TERRITORY – T Angland (13) 56.5kgs

Struggled to make ground on the heavy track when resuming from a spell in the June Stakes, finishing fifth (4.5 lengths) behind Avoid Lightning, before looming up out wide last start in an Open class race at Randwick over 1200m, before his run peaked late.

He crossed the line in seventh spot, 3 ¾ lengths behind Oakfield Commands and Zaratone.

Winners of that race where up on speed and closer to the fence but still yet to prove himself at this level and would have had liked for him to hit the line stronger than he did last start.

SPECIAL OFFER 2: $700 FREE BET on the RAMORNIE HANDICAP – Luxbet

5. BIG MONEY – R Thompson (1) 56kgs

The 4yo by Choisir is flying this preparation having won three of his four starts including his most recent outing, the G3 Healy Stakes (1200m) at Eagle Farm a little of two weeks ago.

Biding his time in the second half of the field, he came with a well timed run to defeat Cape Kidnappers and Seeking More by a head with Bennetta – who ran second in Saturday’s Civic Stakes at Rosehill behind an impressive Generalife – running fourth.

The inside gate for a horse that gets back is a worry but he has the right jockey on board and is in top form.

6. ROCKY KING – T Harrison (9) 56kgs

With an impressive record of ten wins from twenty-two starts, the 4yo trained by the Sunshine Coast’s Tom Bourke, returned to racing two starts in the Listed Lightning Stakes (1000m).

He jumped well and settled second but couldn’t deny the challengers of Cape Kidnappers and Big Money, finishing a credible third one length away.

Most recent start, the G3 Healy Stakes, saw him settle just off a hot speed and in the straight, when looking for a clear running, get tightened for room. He finished eighth (5.7 lengths) behind Big Money.

Best to go on his Lightning Stakes effort but faces a stronger field again here.

7. STARTSMEUP – P Hammersley (6) 54.5kgs

It has been since December 2012 that this 6yo by Hidden Dragon last won a race.

He shot over from a wide draw to lead in the Listed Eye Liner Stakes at Ipswich (1350m) two starts ago before weakening in the straight to run seventh (5 lengths) behind Alma’s Fury who he again led and finished behind in the Glasshouse Handicap (1400m) at Sunshine Coast last Saturday week.

Last start over 1200m was in the G3 George Moore last December, where he settled back and finished hard to run a neck third to Lucky Hussler and Morning Captain.

Will get the chance to tail the speed here and getting back to 1200m should help but he has some significant improvement to make on recent efforts.

8. LIESELE – G Colless (8) 54kgs

Impressive winner of the Listed Alinghi Stakes (1100m) last Spring (Lonhspresso 3rd, Avoid Lightning 4th) but her two runs back since returning from a spell early last month, suggest she is well off that form.

She finished second to last and over six lengths from the winner Cape Kidnappers first up in the Lightning Stakes (1000m) and was no better last Saturday week in a BM 90 on the Sunshine Coast (1000m) when ninth (6.1 lengths) behind the winner.

One from one this track/trip but will find it hard to maintain that record on Wednesday.

9. MR FAVULOUS – (12) 54kgs

He ran his third consecutive second placing last start when finishing ¾ of a length behind Excellantes in the Listed Ascot Handicap (1200m) on Saturday.

Shot across from a wide barrier, as he has drawn here, in the Ascot and did the work whilst the winner sat on his back and had last shot.

Going well but if he does tackle the quick back up, will find this race harder again.

10. VILLAMILL – M Paget (11) 54kgs

The 6yo mare enjoyed a nice run in transit when returning from a seven week let up in the Carlton Cup Quality here at Grafton last week and got the job done in the end, defeating Bandit Queen by ¾ lengths.

Unfortunately the draw hasn’t been kind to her here and the depth of race much stronger.

11. JET STYLE – A Gibbons (7) 54kgs

The soon-to-be 8yo has had three starts since returning from a fifteen month spell in April of this year and none, particularly his last, would suggest he can win this race.

Eight weeks ago, at his most recent start, the Tycoon Ruler gelding finishing last and over thirteen lengths from the winner in the Gunnedah Cup.

Shooting too high in this race.

SPECIAL OFFER 3: $700 FREE BET on the RAMORNIE HANDICAP – Sportingbet

12. BANDIT QUEEN – M Bennett (4) 54kgs

5yo mare who does enjoying racing on this track, having won four of her nine starts and being placed a further three times.

One of those placings came last week when she chased home Villamill in the Carlton Cup Quality.

She needed to be winning that in good style to be winning here.

13. CHEVAL DU FEU – G Lynch (10)

Another whose last start came in the Carlton Cup Quality here at Grafton last week, finishing from well back in the field to claim third (1 length) behind Villamill and Bandit Queen.

Like those who are also coming out of that race, likely to find this one too rich.

RACE OVERVIEW:

A solid pace should be set here with Hidden Warrior, Under The Sun and Mr Favulous all pushing forward.

Trailing the speed, like he did at Scone, should be Testarhthym and he can make it two wins from three starts this prep here.

From the second to widest gate, he simply got too far back last start but made good ground being ridden for luck through the centre of the field.

He’ll be ready to pounce on the turn here and represents good each way odds.

Big Money is flying but some concern over him drawing the inside gate at his current price.

Hidden Warriors can bounce back here on a dry track and the Grafton circuit should suit.
