A $250k race for 2yo colts, gelding and fillies run over 1200m that is restricted to horses sold or passed in at the Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale: Summer and Winter Books. The early favourite is Robbie Laing’s Boomwaa at $2.50. Laing has booked the services of Hugh Bowman who helped deliver Laing is biggest win as a trainer last Spring when guiding Polanski to victory in the VRC Derby. His biggest challenger according to the market is New Zealand visitor Vinnie Eagle who is at $3.50.

1. BOOMWAA – J Bowman (2)
Purchased for $46k, the son of Mutawaajid led all the way when winning the G3 Maribyrnong Plate on Stakes Day last year at this third race start. The gelding had four weeks off before returning a fortnight ago, running second to Fighting Sun at Rosehill by ¾ of a length. He led again last start and has drawn ideally to do so here as well. He will be fitter and better for having had the experience of the Sydney way of going and prove hard to beat.
Odds: $2.40
2. VINNIE EAGLE – J McDonald (13)
Sold to New Zealand interests for $65k, the son of I Am Invincible made a winning debut in a maiden race at Ruakaka back in September. Then immediately spelled, the gelding returned with an impressive win when leading all the way to score a 2 ½ length win in the G3 Eclipse Stakes (1200m) over Steel Rose and Vespa. Drawn the “visitor’s gate” which will make his job tougher but cannot ignore the style in which he won last start.
Odds: $3.30
3. ALSOADAMAS – T Clark (7)
Broadmeadow Trainer Craig Roberts trains this colt by I Am Invincible. He made his debut back in November running seventh of nine (beaten 11.2 lengths) behind the promising Earthquake (early favourite in Golden Slipper markets) before three weeks later, running into another handy one when fifth of ten (six lengths) behind Memorial in a Rosehill 2yo Open event. Ran third in a Wyong trial just over a week ago but even though he has met some smart ones in each of his races, still wanted to see a bit more from him before including him among the selections.
Odds: $81.00
4. ARMEGEDDON ON IT – (5)
Makes the trip up from Victoria does this Domesday colt trained by Geelong conditioner Chris Calthorpe. He has been well accounted for in both of his starts thus far – a last on debut at Flemington behind I Am The General and sixth of eight to Chivalry (beaten 5 ¾ lengths). He has started at 100/1 and 80/1 respectively in those races and would expect another big price to be on offer here.
Odds: $126.00
5. CONARCHIE – N Berry (6)
Clarry Conners parted with $18k to buy this son of Time Thief who made his debut a fortnight ago at Rosehill. He faced up against a smart group of juveniles and the event won by highly promising fellow debutante Fighting Sun with Boomwaa and Kumaon, 2nd and 3rd. Conarchie finished sixth of ten (7.1 lengths) and would need to show some significant improvement.
Odds: $81.00
6. AFFIRMATION – N Rawiller (3)
Trainer Tony McEvoy purchased this Not A Single Doubt colt for $50k who is out of former Darley and Octagonal mare, Apocrypha. He has been schooled at McEvoy’s Adelaide stables and looked well prepared in his only trial, a half length win at Morphettville almost a fortnight ago. He has made a long trip to be here, comes from an astute yard and is drawn well with the services of one of the country’s leading hoops. Not to be taken lightly.
Odds: $7.50
7. SMOKIN SNITZEL – G Schofield (12)
A Snitzel colt who also makes his debut and is the first of two runners in the race for Triple Crown Syndications who have claimed this race twice in past six years, including with another first starter in Cavalry Rose. Purchased for $92k, he ran a nice third to Invisible (who subsequently won on debut) in his first barrier trial on Christmas Eve before a fortnight later, producing another strong effort when doing all he had to do in running a head second to Brazen Beau. Draw is a poor one but the connections record in this race, make him worthy of consideration.
Odds: $16.00
8. URATTA BELLE – C Reith (8)
She stepped out at as an unwanted 40/1 chance when making her debut back in December at Warwick Farm but belied her odds by finishing well from back in the field to run third to Echo Gal over 1000m She again got back in the field from the widest draw at her next and only start since, which came a fortnight ago when fourth to Fighting Sun and Boomwaa. Can’t knock either run and the step up to six furlong should be a plus, as will be the expected solid tempo. She could run a race better than her opening quote of $19.00 suggests.
Odds: $19.00
9. PEGGY JEAN – K McEvoy (12)
The second of Triple Crown’s runners, she cost $42k and on her debut at Randwick last week, returned a good portion of the price-tag by running second to Nayeli by two lengths. She got back from the inside gate and will gate back again here after drawing the second to widest gate. A daughter of Myboycharlie, her debut run was encouraging and the extra trip will be to her liking. Will need a touch of luck from the draw but rightly kept safe in early markets at $6.50.
Odds: $6.50
10. LA BELLA ROUGE – (10)
The only start for this Ready’s Image filly has been a fourth (3 ¾ lengths) behind Kumaon, Cyclone and Francesco at Rosehill the week before Christmas. Kumaon subsequently ran third behind Fighting Sun and Boomwaa whilst Cyclone ran a good fourth in last week’s 2yo Magic Million Classic. The form out of the race is solid and with natural improvement to come, a case could easily be made for trainer Grant Allard’s runner at $26.
Odds: $26.00
11. THILTRE – D Edmonds (1)
The daughter of Magic Albert was knocked down to Port Macquarie trainer Marc Quinn last years Summer Book Sale for $14k She made her debut at Scone just after Christmas and settled third in the field of six runners.
She was only able to hold her position in the run to the line and finished second (1 ¼ lengths) to Wigginout. Drawn the inside gate here and on her first up run, likely to find a few too good for her.
Odds: $41.00
12. DOOMSDAY PREPPER – J Collett (4)
Hard to find anything encouraging about either of this Domesday filly’s runs thus far. Trainer Greg Hickman took her to Gosford just after Christmas for her first run which resulted in a fifth of eight (beaten 8 ½ lengths) behind Almalad in a maiden race. She then finished a similar margin from the winner at her next and most recent start, when eighth of ten to Nayeli. Not in this race.
Odds: $251.00
13. UNEQUIVOCAL – (9)
By Not A Single Doubt out of General Nediym mare Chocaholic, the $39k purchase will be making her debut. She had two trials for Hawkesbury trainer Noel Mayfield-Smith, one each in September and October of last year, before a spell of fourteen weeks. She’s been prepped for this race with a smart barrier trial win (by 5 lengths) at Rosehill just over a week ago.
Odds: $26.00
RACE OVERVIEW
Boomwaa gets the run of the race from his gate and will be in a prominent position on settling along with Kiwi visitor Vinne Eagle, who will shoot across from his wide gate. Each of Boomwaa’s four runs having been good efforts in quality races, he appears the obvious choice. There are a couple though that it should pay to keep a close eye. Whilst we haven’t seen him race, there’s plenty to like about Affirmation. He comes from a good yard who think enough of him to make the long trip from Adelaide. Drawing a good gate and having Rawiller onboard increase his chances considerably. A couple who could be surging home late are Peggy Jean, Uratta Belle and La Bella Rouge. All three fillies will more than likely get back in the run but enough to like about each of their respective last starts and getting out to six furlong will benefit them.
