A cracking field of 3yo colts and geldings will line up to contest the Group 1 Australian Guineas at Flemington this Saturday. All bar Shamus Award will be looking to register their first win at this level. According to the early betting, the most likely to do so will by Hucklebuck who quoted a $3.80 chance, out from his opening quote of $3.00. Eurozone went within a whisker of recording a Group 1 win three weeks back in the C F Orr Stakes and well supported to go one better here at $5.00. It has been a tough race for punters in recent years with three of the past four winners all coming in out double figures odds.

1. SHAMUS AWARD – C Williams (9)

The Cox Plate from last year returned to racing three weeks ago by finishing third (1.6 lengths) in the C. F. Orr Stakes (1400m). Danny O’Brien’s charge sat second in the run behind eventual winner Moment Of Change (since won again) before his run peaked over the final stages. Second up and a back to his won age group are positives. The son of Snitzel hasn’t produced a bad run yet in his eleven starts career and would expect he’d figure prominently again.

Odds: $6.50

2. CRITERION – B Rawiller (4)

Took a few runs to hit his straps last time in work but when he found form, ran second in the G2 Stan Fox (1500m) and G1 Champion Stakes (2000m) before claiming fourth in the VRC Derby (2500m). The Sebring colt returned to racing in the G3 C S Hayes Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago and from just worse than midfield, finished strongly to run fourth (2 ½ lengths) behind Hucklebuck. Improves with racing and his first up effort would suggest he is in for a good campaign.

Odds: $12.00

3. EUROZONE – G Boss (5)

He rounded out his spring campaign with victory in the G2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m), his fourth win from only six starts, defeating Criterion by a head. The son of Northern Meteor commenced his autumn preparation three weeks ago by running a narrow second to Moment of Change in the G1 C. F. Orr Stakes. He settled third in the run and was closing fast at the end of the Orr, finishing within a nose of Moment Of Change who has since won another Group 1 race – last weekend’s Futurity Stakes. He’ll be fitter, takes up a good position from gate five and will prove hard to beat.

Odds: $5.00

4. THUNDER FANTASY – M Zahra (6)

Anthony Cummings’ colt progressed nicely last spring and went from a maiden win to a placing in the VRC Derby in only five starts. He has continued to improve over the break judging by his first up win in the G2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) three weeks ago. The son of Lucky Owners took up a forward position from a good draw and was strong through the line, holding off all challengers to win by 1 ¾ lengths. A further 200m of this race will be to his benefit and despite taking on a stronger field than last time, with natural improvement expected from his first up effort and a good draw, he his capable of handling the rise in class.

Odds: $11.00

5. HUCKLEBUCK – D Tourneur (8)

The Elvestroem gelding from Philip Stoke’s Adelaide stables made it five wins from seven starts with an impressive 1 ¼ length win last start in the C. S. Hayes Stakes (1400m). He shouldered his way out upon straightening before unleashing a neat turn of foot last start, defeating Prince Harada and The Quarterback. Can’t knock the record he has put together, including two good performance at Group 3 level at this track, but does take on some smart 3yo’s for the first time.

Odds: $3.80

6. PRINCE HARADA – C Brown (7)

Resumed from a sixteen week spell as the 7/4 favourite in the G3 Manfred Stakes two starts ago where he had his chance in the run before finishing fourth (1 ¾ lengths) to Bull Point. He next lined up in the C S Hayes Stakes where, from a wide gate, he took up a forward position in the run. In a better effort than his first up outing, he fought on well and was able to stave off all bar the impressive performance of Hucklebuck, finishing second by 1 ¼ lengths. Should be able to secure a more comfortable run here from gate seven and gets his chance to live up the early expectations placed on him.

Odds: $15.00

7. ROCK HERO – M Rodd (10)

The son of Fastnet Rock produced an impressive performance to win the Listed Dulcify Quality (1600m) last preparation before finishing eighth in the G1 Champion Stakes (2000m). With two barrier trials under his belt, he returned to racing in the G2 Autumn Stakes as the 9/4 favourite and from a good draw, took up a forward position in the run. He held his ground well in the straight and bettered all bar Thunder Fantasy who beat him 1 ¾ lengths. Fitter again and being a big striding horse, he’ll appreciate the Flemington track and be doing his best work late. He rates a place chance at double figure odds.

Odds: $14.00

8. SURGE AHEAD – C Symons (1)

He rounded out last preparation by registering his third win from four starts when claiming the Listed Connoisseur Stakes (1800m) from Pompeius on Oaks Day. The Danehill Dancer gelding returned in the C. S. Hayes Stakes (1400m) a fortnight ago but wasn’t able to improve his position in the home straight and weakened to run seventh (5.6 lengths) behind Thunder Fantasy. It’s hard to concede him a chance off of that run.

Odds: $81.00

9. TERONADO – C Newitt (14)

Trained by Gold Coast’s Bruce Hill, this gelding by Testa Rossa ran third of four with 59kgs in a unsuitably run BM 74 first up from a spell two starts back. He produced a much stronger effort and caught the eye in the more genuinely C. S. Hayes Stakes last start, finishing fifth (2 ¾ lengths) behind Hucklebuck. He has drawn the widest gate here so again, like he did last start, will have to come from the tail of the field but there was enough to like about that effort to consider him some hope here.

Odds: $15.00

10. THE QUARTERBACK – M Allen (11)

The Robbie Griffiths trained runner resumed in the G3 Manfred Stakes (1200m), his first run on metropolitan track, two starts back when first up from a fourteen week spell. The son of Street Boss was last on the turn before making ground in the straight and easing out from behind leaders late to run an eye-catching third (1 ¾ length) to Bull Point. His next and most recent start came in the C S Hayes Stake (1400m) where he followed eventual winner Hucklebuck throughout. Didn’t have the same turn of foot as Hucklebuck and finished third (2.1 lengths). Had every chance last time and drawn a little awkwardly here in eleven.

Odds: $11.00

11. LATE CHARGE – V Duric (12)

Winner of his first two starts last year, both on slow tracks, in impressive style before stepping up to the stakes races during the spring. He finished just behind the place-getters in the Listed Henry Buck (1400m) and G2 Bill Stutt Stakes (1600m) before failing in the G1 Caulfield Guineas and being sent for a spell. Wendy Kelly’s Hard Spun colt then returned to racing three weeks ago in the G2 Autumn Stakes where, as per usual, he settled at the tail of the field. He didn’t help himself by laying in running home last start but still managed to run third, two lengths behind Bull Point. He’ll get back again from his gate and will be fitter, but will also find this race no easier than any of his previous starts.

Odds: $17.00

12. ALPHA BEAT – C Schofield (13)

He sustained a long wide run in last week’s G2 Autumn Classic (1800m) before running third to Vilanova and Countersnip. The Magnus gelding will again find the going tough from another wide draw here and on the quick-back, stepping up in grade and coming back in distances, he faces plenty of challenges.

Odds: $67.00

13. BARDEM – L Nolen (2)

Peter Moody’s Savabeel gelding won a Geelong Maiden on debut before running second to Kushadasi in Adelaide last year and being spelled. After a substantial twenty-three week break, he returned to racing in the G2 Autumn Stakes (1400m) and would’ve pleased trainer and connections with his fourth placing. He found his fair share of traffic in the straight but hit the line in good style regardless to finish just over two lengths from Thunder Fantasy. He should be able to secure a run from gate 2 and capable of a better effort than his current quote of $41 would suggest.

Odds: $41.00

14. ARTIE’S SHORE – J Mott (3)

He finally cracked his maiden status two starts ago, at career run number seven, with a 1 ¼ length win in a Warrnambool Maiden (1200m). He then contested a RST 70 at Sandown’s Hillside track where he made up a stack of ground form last on the turn and just failed by a long neck, to make it consecutive victories, running second to Mista Spot. Massive rise in class and will be easily accounted for.

Odds: $126.00

RACE OVERVIEW

Hucklebuck was good last start. He had the right run and also showed a neat turn of foot when required and had a 1 ¼ lengths to spare on the line but, he takes on some smart 3yo’s here for the first time and from gate eight, the first time has drawn wider than six in any of his starts, it’s hard to know where he’ll get to in the run. Is rightly one of the leading chances but opened up a little tight at $3.50. Much prefer the $5.00 on offer about Eurozone who returned with a slashing run behind Moment Of Change in the Orr Stakes. Moment Of Chance franked that form last week with victory in the Futurity and from barrier five, Eurozone should get every chance in the run. Thunder Fantasy achieved a lot in a small space of time last prep and has come back in good order, comfortably winning the Autumn Stakes. The increase in distance and the likelihood of being ridden just of the speed are both positives that should see him run well at a good price.

  3. HUCKLEBUCK
