The first of five Group 1 races on Saturday’s Rosehill card is for the 3yo fillies over 2000m. Norzita, who went within a head of claiming the G1 Coolmore Stakes at her last start, is the early and obvious favourite at $2.80. Sticking with the Coolmore form-line, Dear Demi is on the second line of beating ($4.80, out from an opening price of $4.00) and the only other runner in single figures, is the NZ Derby winner, Habibi ($5.00, in from an opening price of $6.50).

Vinery Stud Stakes Form Guide

1. DRIEFTONTEIN – N Rawiller (11)

Rarely runs a bad race this daughter of Fastnet Rock and that was the case last start where she finished sixth, beaten less than two lengths, behind Appearance in the G1 Coolmore Classic. Like today, she drew barrier eleven and crossed to race on the pace and stuck on well, only being claimed inside the last 100m and chopped right out with 25m to go.

Odds: $19.00

2. DEAR DEMI – J Cassidy (15)

After a pleasing return in the G2 Light Fingers Stakes, the VRC Oaks winner won the G2 Surround Stakes by a neck over Driefontein at her next start. She started 13/2 in the Coolmore and after racing three wide with cover, was produced at the top of the straight in time to produce more than what she did before finally running eleventh. Might’ve been too far back last start in a race where they ran it along and her previous record means she deserves the benefit of the doubt but, will need to be near her best to win from the widest gate.

Odds: $5.00

3. Norzita – J Bowman (7)

Comfortable victory first up in the Listed Typhoon Tracy three starts back and looked un-backable odds with 200m to go at her next start in the G2 Kewney Stakes but was blown out of the water by Flying Snitzel. Enjoyed the extra distance and strong tempo of the Coolmore Classic last start and was in a three way go at the finish, only missing by a head. The 2000m is ideal, so is the draw and jockey. There’s nothing not to like about her here.

Odds: $2.80

4. HABIBI – V Colgan (3)

New Zealand filly who comes to Australia with the imposing record of six wins from seven starts including, at her most recent effort earlier this month, the G1 NZ Derby. When markets were first posted on Wednesday, the daughter of Ekraar opened at $6.50 with Sportsbet however, punters were quick to step in and take that price and she’s now firmed into a $5.00 chance. Her trainer claimed the Derby and/or Oaks were the targets and she hasn’t raced in over a month, so wonder if she just might need this?

Odds: $4.60

5. LONGPORT – C Reith (9)

She was ridden out in the G2 Surround Stakes to sit second in the run but was no match for Dear Demi and Driefontein late when finishing third before going into the Keith Nolan Classic at Kembla Grange as the 5/2 favourite. From a wide gate, she jumped well and again settled on the speed but weakened noticeably late to finish six lengths from the winner. Can’t see her figuring in the finish on these two efforts.

Odds: $26.00

6. ALZORA – J McDonald (5)

Cracked it for her second win of her career with a strong victory first up in the G3 The Vanity and her two subsequent runs, where she finished fourth in both the G2 Kewney and Listed Alexandra Stakes, would mean she’s some chance here, especially from the draw. She’s won her only other start at this distance and stuck on well last time out behind You’re So Good, whom she meets 2.5kgs better. From a good draw, has to be conceded some chance.

Odds: $17.00

7. YOU’RE SO GOOD – V Duric (12)

Savabeel filly, who thoroughly deserved her last start win the Listed Alexandra Stakes at Moonee Valley after having finished second in both the G3 The Vanity and G1 Australian Guineas when against the males. Drawn wide and her opening price of $9.00 has also widened to $13.00 however, as she proved in the Guineas – a race dominated by those up front, she can produce a finish.

Odds: $13.00

8. CAMEO –     (6)

She had a Maiden and Class 1 win to her credit for team Darley from eight starts before stepping out as a 16/1 shot in the Keith Nolan Classic (1600m) last start. From the widest gate, Craig Williams slotted her into a good spot just off the pace and the daughter of Shamardal toughed out a nose win over Royal Descent. Will go forward again from six but fancy the Coolmore and Alexandra Stakes formlines are stronger.

Odds: $26.00

9. SUMMERBLISS – C Williams (10)

Mick Kent and Gilgai Farm will be looking to go one better than they did with Epingle last week with this daughter of Danehill Dancer. She showed her ability by running third in the VRC Oaks last Spring at only her third race start and, resumed with a fourth in a BM 78 event at Moonee Valley over 1600m at the start of March. Showed she had improved with that run under her belt with a game third to You’re So Good in the Alexandra Stakes (beaten 1.6 lengths). Outside the favourite, she’ll appreciate this trip more than any other and will be finishing well.

Odds: $17.00

10. ROYAL DESCENT – C Brown (8)

Well bred filly from Chris Waller yard who won her first two starts and then, when attempting a black type race for the first time, stuck on well behind Dear Demi in the G2 Surround Stakes, running fourth (beaten 3.9 lengths). At her next and most recent start, she went within a lip of claiming the G3 Keith Nolan Classic. Had her chance last start and whilst we can’t knock her past two efforts, think she’ll be covered by a few others here.

Odds: $21.00

11. CAMPANIA – T Berry (4)

Won two Benchmark races on the trot and in good style before a freshen up and coming back for a tilt at some Group races for fillies. Unfortunately for connections though, she’s been well accounted for in both the G2 Surround Stakes (finished ninth of eleven) and G3 Keith Nolan Classic (finished last). Not on those efforts.

Odds: $126.00

12. HOYBELL – D Dunn (14)

Smart win two starts back at Newcastle against older horses before getting back from the inside draw in the Keith Nolan Classic and finishing midfield, a touch over three lengths from the winner. Was specked in betting last start – 14’s into 11’s, but only fair in the run home and will have to improve too much on that run, to be winning here.

Odds: $101.00

13. GONDOKORO –       (2)

A Zabeel filly from Pat Carey’s Mornington establishement, that finally broke her maiden status when stepping out in a Moonee Valley Maiden at career start number nine three weeks back. Did run fifth to Alzora and Summerbliss in the Ethereal Stakes during the spring but can’t see her making the jump from Maiden to Group 1.

Odds: $81.00

14. SHE’S A GIRL – N Berry (13)

One win from eleven starts for this filly by Bold Expectation and that came three starts back in a Class 1 at Wyong. Her two subsequent runs have resulted in a third in a Restricted race at Newcastle and then, a cheeky front running effort in the Keith Nolan Classic where she held on for fifth.

Odds: $201.00

15. PURPLE MUSE – L Nolen (1)

Well bred Redoute’s Choice filly for Peter Moody who won her Maiden two starts back at Ballarat before stepping into the deep end and finishing second to last, 3 ½ lengths behind You’re So Good in the Alexandra Stakes. Not too bad last start given the jump in grade and drawn to get every chance from one, but that won’t be enough of an advantage.

Odds: $51.00

OVERVIEW

Find it hard to come up with a valid reason not to go with Norzita here. She was good last start in the Coolmore, being fourth up over 2000m looks ideal, she’s drawn well and has Bowman up. She opened up at $3.30 with Sportsbet but no surprise to see that taken quickly and now a $2.80 quote. Couple here at good prices that I thought might fill the placings – Alzora @ $17.00 (drawn well and has a Listed win at 2000m to her name), You’re So Good @ $12.00 and Summerbliss @ $17.00 Not sure what to make of Dear Demi last start. She might need the longer trip now but from barrier 15, happy to risk her and similarly for the NZ filly Habibi. First up for over a month, I’d prefer to see her than take the $5.00.
