1. MID SUMMER MUSIC – L Nolen (10)
She just held her position in the run to the line finishing eighth beaten 4 lengths behind Hallowell Belle in the G2 Gilgai Stakes. Sports a very good second up record (two wins from four starts) including a second last prep to Atlantic Jewel.
Odds: $8.50
2. GREEN BIRDIE – C Williams (11)
Slowly away two starts back in the G3 McEwen Stakes (beaten two lengths) behind Bel Sprinter and than had to get back from his wide gate last start in the G2 AJ Moir Stakes before finishing seventh (beaten 1.8). Fancy he’s going better than his form reads, he’s draw wide again but will be doing his best work late.
Odds: $15.00
3. THANKGODYOU’REHERE – G Boss (3)
He ran a very good race first up for his new trainer partnership of Morgan/Widdison in the G2 Moir Stakes, finishing third behind Buffering. He’ll be better again one would think for having that run and drawn to get every chance here.
Odds: $4.00
4. CANALI – L Currie (5)
First up for seven weeks a month ago when third (beaten 1.2 lengths) behind Dream Face. Speedy customer that has ran some handy races behind the likes of First Command and Catapult last preparation. At his best on a dry track.
Odds: $10.00
5. CURTANA – B Melham (8)
A mare by Exceed and Excel who ran second in this race last year behind Sepoy third up from a spell, after good efforts in the Gilgai Stakes. She second up here today after she got a long way back in the Listed Testa Rossa three weeks backs. Again, she’s drawn awkwardly and at best when racing handy to the speed.
Odds: $8.50
6. FREERETURN – C Newitt (4)
Won the Listed Regal Roller here at Caulfield three starts back on a Heavy track and good again at his most recent start in running third to Sea Lord in the Listed MacLeod Stakes at Moonee Valley. Going well at Listed level but stepping up a grade or two here against this field.
Odds: $15.00
7. HOWMUCHDOYOULOVEME – B Avdulla (2)
Written Tycoon gelding who boasts four wins from his five starts including a decisive victory in the Listed Ramornie Handicap (winning by 3 ¾ ) at his most recent start in July of this year. Obviously has more than his fair share of ability and from his gate, he’ll be leading or sitting second and provided he handles his first look at Caulfield, will be a live chance.
Odds: $3.40
8. METALLURGICAL – C Reith (9)
He won the Listed Hinkler Quality over the Winter Carnival but struggled when tackling the higher grade races in three subsequent starts. First up here, has an awkward draw to overcome and would be surprised to see him finish in the first half of the field.
Odds: $21.00
9. ALTAR – (7)
First up last preparation she ran fourth (beaten 2.7) in the G2 Light Fingers Stakes behind the smart mares Sea Siren, Streama and Hallowell Belle and backed that up two starts later with a second in the Listed Darby Munro. She’s been given two barrier trials in readiness for her return here winning the first and running third (beaten a neck) in the second – not to be underestimated.
Odds: $9.00
10. LATIN NEWS – D Dunn (6)
Have to go back to twenty-three starts to April 2010 to find this blokes last win – in the Listed Gosford Guineas. He has had two starts in this time both in Open Class at Eagle Farm and on each occasion he finished second. Aiming high here.
Odds: $26.00
11. STANZOUT – N Hall (1)
Competed last Sunday at the Cranbourne Cup meeting in the Apache Cat (1000m) where, after getting up on the inside, looked like he’d be in the finish but given it was his first run in eleven weeks, his condition gave out late and he finished third (beaten 1.8). Hasn’t won in since August 2010 and picked a tough race to break the drought.
Odds: $61.00
OVERVIEW
Howmuchdoyouloveme ($3.20) should take advantage of his good draw and jump to the front here. He has a tonne of ability and should be very hard to run down but Thankgodyou’rehere ($4.00) might be able to. He has the benefit of one run under his belt and should be able to keep the favourite within his sites as they turn for home. Mid Summer Music ($7.50) has drawn out wide but with only one turn to negotiate, might be able to sit wide – possibly with cover, and produce a finish.
