The Caulfield Guineas Prelude run over 1400m is the first of the feature races on Sunday at Caulfield racecourse. The current favourites for the race Epaulette and Ashokan will be having their first runs in Victoria in preparation for a Caulfield Guineas run. Caulfield Guineas Prelude Form Guide
1. EPAULETTE
Returned to racing with a solid effort in the G3 Run To The Roses at Rosehill and followed that up by storming home off a slick pace, to land the G1 Golden Rose (1400m) at Rosehill a fortnight ago. From his wide gate last start, dropped out to the tail of the field, he has drawn much better here and expecting him to be closer in the run. Only needs a little luck in running to be involved in the finish.

2. ASHOKAN
A much better effort second up in the G1 Golden Rose last start. Settled on the leader’s back and a slick pace and was only bettered by two swoopers in Epauletter and Albrecht. Draw does him no favours and his only win from six starts (the G3 Skyline Stks) was on Slow.

3. SHAMEXPRESS
He was very good first up in the G3 McNeil Stakes here at Caulfield behind Lady of Harrods and Kabayan. So much so that connections parted with a late entry fee to participate in the G1 Golden Rose. Unfortunately though, he was unable to raise his connections hopes during the run and finished well beaten ninth. Back to Caulfield and the Melbourne way of going, expect a much better effort here.

4. TIMELY TRUCE
Participated in some handy races with limited success earlier in the year then two starts back, second up this time in, he finally broke through for his maiden win with a comfortably seven length victory in a Geelong Maiden. Immediately backed that up with a good effort in the Listed Henry Bucks, closing well from the tail of the field to finish fourth (beaten 1.4) behind Jimando (who races in the Stutt Stakes Friday night). Will want a slick pace but watch for him late.

5. AWESOME BRO
Won his first two starts and has been not far off the money at his most recent two efforts in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (fifth, beaten 1.5) and Henry Bucks (second, beaten ¾). Has an awkward draw to contend with here but going well enough to be a considered here.

6. DOMINANT
Another who has competed well in the Listed McKenzie and Henry Bucks at his two runs in this time in. Had a wide draw to overcome last time and pushed forward form it to camp on the speed before finishing fifth, beaten less than two lengths. Should get a sweet run from the inside draw.

7. IF I COULD
Was competitive in the McNeil Stakes first up here at Caulfield behind Lady of Harrods (who has won again since) beaten 1.5 lengths before being taken to Geelong for, what was supposedly to be, a comfortable victory in a Maiden over 1100m – fell in by a nose at odds on. Will appreciate this trip a lot more and don’t be too distracted by last start.

8. MURCIELAGA
Son of Testa Rossa who comfortably won his debut (W’bool Maiden) in May and was immediately spelled. Returned in the Danehill Stakes G2 up the Flemington straight three weeks back and only held his spot in the run to the line.

9. LET GO LENNI
Debuted in May for a third on a Slow track as 6/4 favourite in Open Class 2yo race at Sandown and then spelled. Returned with a good style of win in a Kilmore Maiden last week. Appears to have his fair share of ability but this is a big, big jump in grade.

OVERVIEW
Hard to go past Epaulette given the probability of a good run off the speed, the style of his last start victory and the fact that he ran Pierro to a lip last prep in the G2 Todman Stakes. Wouldn’t want to take any shorter than the $2.60 on offer though. Expecting Shamexpress to return to the form he displayed first up after failing to deliver in Sydney. Looking for value, If I Could will appreciate the time over this trip to get into this work and look for him late.
