One TAB punter has placed $20,000 at $8.50 on Anthony Van Dyck to win tomorrow’s Melbourne Cup at Flemington.
The TAB customer in question will make a $150,000 profit if the Aidan O’Brien-trained horse can improve on his runner-up finish to Verry Elleegant in the Caulfield Cup on October 17.
The $20,000 wager on Anthony Van Dyck to win the race that stops a nation in 2020 is the second-biggest bet at TAB on the Melbourne Cup 2020.
Yesterday, one punter bet $20,000 the win and $5000 the place at $13/$4 on Russian Camelot, which would result in a $280,000 collect if the Danny O’Brien-trained horse won.
“Tomorrow’s Melbourne Cup is one of the most open editions in history and Anthony Van Dyck is one of five gallopers that could be favourite when the barriers open,” TAB’s Adam Hamilton said.
“Tiger Moth is the current favourite at $8 ahead of Anthony Van Dyck ($8.50), Surprise Baby ($9), Prince Of Arran ($10) and Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet ($11).”
Punters are also rallying around two of the best stories in the race and they are Surprise Baby and Prince of Arran.
“Surprise Baby, the bush horse trained in Horsham by Paul Preusker, is taking on all the glamour internationals and is really solid at $9, and may even press for favouritism,” Hamilton said.
“Prince Of Arran ($10) has Jamie Kah aboard and she is looking to become only the second female jockey to ride a Melbourne Cup winner.”
The outsiders that have firmed significantly since Saturday night’s barrier draw are Master Of Reality ($26 to $19) and Persan ($51 to $31).
