A strong field has been assembled for the Kangaroo Island Cup (1880m) this Saturday.

2025 Kangaroo Island Cup Runner Preview:

1. Mission Phoenix: He’s done nothing this time in and his run on Thursday…he was terrible, finishing tailed off last. All time improvement required to feature here.

2. Eureka’s Victory: Just found them too sharp two weeks ago at Morphettville but kept finding the line. Dominant winner in the race last year and looks like he has been set for the race. Hard to beat.

3. He’s Maverick: Did too much work on speed at Morphettville last time but even allowing for that, he was quite weak late in the piece. Gets in well after the claim and his best is good enough to be a rough outside hope.

4. Persian Empire: Strong winner here last month but was plain in the race mentioned above that He’s Maverick contested, won by Fox Gem. Prior efforts were sound so I wouldn’t be dismissing him.

5. Any Luck: Slightly comes back in trip after racing in the Naracoorte Cup last start where she was game but the trip was a bridge too far. Better suited here, she’s a definite improver despite the tricky gate.

6. Charlesfort: Think he’s the one to beat. Got a 12/10 ride from Atkinson at Morphettville last start but worked home with purpose behind Fox Gem. The gate makes things tricky but with luck, he’ll take beating.

7. Midnight Rush: At the time of writing, he was accepted and ran on Thursday but it was over 1200m. Dare say it was a barrier trial for this. Either way, he’s got none here.

8. Prancing Countess: Ran last Saturday on the Parks track where she got too far back in the run but made up decent headway late in the piece. Not the best of gates but has a gate to use, settle closer and be effective late.

9. Savatoff: Didn’t mind the way he closed off on Thursday but this looks much harder. Can’t entertain him.

10. Grinzinger Allee: Not measuring up here.

11. Whisky Sour (First Emergency): Given a very sore back on Thursday and doubt he backs up here.

12. Cowley’s Creek (Second Emergency): Just fair on Thursday in a weaker race. Not really good enough for mine against this lot.
