The stars were out in force across Sydney and Melbourne for trials last week at Rosehill, Caulfield and Flemington. Here are five horses to blackbook for this prep.
Rosehill Monday February 5, Heat One- Redzel:
He’s back and he’ll take a power of beating in the Lightning Stakes on Saturday. First trial was inconclusive but this trial suggested he’s returned from a hectic Winter/Spring in fab order, bolting up in leading all the way and smashing the clock under a good hold. Alizee very good but to be expected given she is a sprinter/miler herself. But all eyes for the Everest winner.

Rosehill Monday February 5, Heat Seven- Girl Sunday:
The golden rule with Rosehill trials is that if they run anywhere near sub 53, they’ll go close to winning their next race start. That being the case, I think Girl Sunday will be a ripping chance when she resumes. First trial was solid, but her effort here was outstanding. Led all the way under Josh Parr and just spanked without really being asked, running 53 flat. Not quite as impressive as Redzel, but still a brilliant piece of work.
Caulfield Tuesday February 6, Heat One- Theanswermyfriend:
Very interesting runner for the Carnival. Formerly with Robert Smerdon but is now under the care of Henry Dwyer. Thought he trialled up beautifully last Tuesday at Caulfield. Wasn’t asked to do much but was very impressive in the way he went, closing off nicely nearer the inside under no pressure at all. Does hold a nomination for the Newmarket.
Flemington Friday February 9, Heat Two- Qafila:
The standout performer of the morning at Headquarters. Led all the way under Olly but what I loved was the change up speed she produced when asked for the effort the last 200m. Always a big tick for youngsters when they are asked for more and they respond. She could well be the forgotten two year old.
Flemington Friday February 9, Heat Thirteen- Sin To Win
Didn’t mind the way this bloke went in his jump out. Sat off a pretty slow speed before peeling out on the turn and though asked for more, he responded nicely and was good to the line and through it. Overall time was slow, but to be expected given they crawled early. Can sprint well fresh, but suspect he might need a run or two. But, the trial indicated he has come back well enough to suggest he can win races this campaign.
