There were some pretty impressive performances on Monday at the Cranbourne trials, most notably an Oakleigh Plate contender in the first trial. So who caught our eye? Find out who down below.

Cranbourne- Monday, February 23: Weather Fine, Track Good 4.

Heat One- Lord Of The Sky (1st):

Tuned up for the Oakleigh Plate with a brilliant trial win. Steve Baster did what all jockeys should do on this horse-just let him run, and in doing so, the horse won by eight lengths and ran sub 46 seconds for the 800m, something which is low flying for the Cranbourne trials. He probably won’t win the Oakleigh Plate, but he’ll give you a great sight, and he appears at the top of his game.

Heat Two- Ready For Victory (2nd):

First official public appearance for this Mick Price youngster, who looked very impressive here. He sat midfield out wide and in the clear under Ollie and went to the line under a really good hold, running second to Mitigate. Ready For Victory is nominated for the Championships, so the stable must have an opinion of him.

Heat Four- The Weald (6th):

This is an interesting one for Godolphin. He is bred to get over more ground being by Street Cry out of a staying mare. He trialled here and he had absolutely no idea what he was doing, running all over the shop, more so when under the whip from Chad Schofield. He was last with about 200m to go, but picked up late and ran sixth. Maybe one to watch for the Spring, but there is talent under the bonnet.

Heat Seven- Very Choosy (1st):

Unraced filly for Robert Smerdon having her second official trial. She jumped well to sit outside the leader, then wobbled badly on the turn and was under riding from Mark Zahra, but the filly picked up nicely and went to the line under a good hold to win. I didn’t mind a couple of runners from this trial previously, so I am confident the form will be strong from this particular heat.

Heat Ten- Bella Capri (1st):

RISA says heat ten, Racing.com says heat eleven. Think most would trust RISA. Anyway, this was a lovely trial win from the Robbie Griffiths filly. She jumped well, sat on the back of the leader before Nathan Punch peeled her out on the turn and she went through her gears nicely under a good hold to win by two lengths. Looks to be in for a good prep.
