Cranbourne- Monday, March 2: Weather Fine, Track Soft 5.
Heat Two- Von Vacheron (1st):
Unraced Not A Single Doubt colt for Matt Laurie who has won both barrier trials, both here, and on both occasions he has been quite impressive. In this particular trial, he jumped well, settled off the two leaders in the run before peeling out early on in the straight and letting down strongly under no pressure. He is nominated for Flemington this Saturday, which I think seems a bit rich for his debut, but the talent is certainly there.
Heat Four- Payroll (3rd):
Another unraced Not A Single Doubt, with this one being a filly for local trainer Richard Laming. The two year old settled just off the speed in third, and pretty much stayed there throughout, but gee she looked to travel well, and easily could have won had she been let down. Really impressive trial from this trial.
Heat Six- Pursuits (1st):
Godolphin filly who has had two career starts, starting off with a solid third to Fontiton in the Preview before running tenth to the filly again in the Prelude. Trialled here, jumped well, stayed near the inside, hit the front early on in the straight and went to the line under a good hold in winning. She is nominated for the Championships, so the stable must have an opinion of her.
Heat Nine- Benchi Pegasus (2nd):
Local galloper who hasn’t raced since September, and this was his first public appearance. He looked pretty impressive here, jumping well from the gates, held the lead near the rail before being headed in the straight, but he wasn’t far away and was under a good grip from Jess Payne. He will be winning races this prep based on this effort.
Heat Fourteen- Lord Sherwood (1st):
Another galloper for Matt Laurie who looked pretty good at the trials. This son of Encosta De Lago jumped okay from the gates and was sitting out wide under Chris Symons. He was given a little squeeze early on in the straight and he let down really nicely, going on to win the trial under a good hold. He is unbeaten in two first up runs, and on this trial, he might make it three from three.
Heat Nineteen- Lord Of The Song (1st):
Patrick Payne finished the morning on a great note thanks to the jumper Lord Of The Song, who was just about the best of the morning. He jumped okay and was beaten for early speed, going back to last. Coming to the turn, Jess Payne eased him away from the rail and got him to the outside and into clear air. He was given a couple of reminders, and he let down very strongly to win and win impressively, which is a great sign given he is a jumper.
