With the start of the NSW 2YO races almost upon us, here is a detailed look at the top five from both genders (in order of talent) who performed at the recent first official trials at Randwick.
Fillies
VACCINE (Not A Single Doubt-A Brilliant Idea) is about the best named horse around, given what’s going on in the world right now. And boy….I’ll tell a man that she can run. Might be very, very good. Only won her trial by a long neck but was cantering.
ENTHAAR (Written Tycoon-Final Agreement) could not have been any more impressive. Won her trial under a grip by 5 lengths. Sat on the outside of the lead cruising all the way and was only asked to go for 100m. In that space, she gapped them. Ran super fast time. Looks a star.
TOTAL BABE (I Am Invincible-In Style) this filly ran good time and did it within herself. Just conserves her energy with her beautiful, floating galloping action. Led her heat, and just went crash when asked to go late. Is very forward but looks pretty sharp too.
MALLORY (Not A Single Doubt-Panarama Ridge) was beaten 2 lengths in her trial but did enough to say she had talent. Wasn’t super fast early, but tracked wide all the way, was asked for a dash as they turned, moved easily into the fray and was allowed to run on in useful time under her own steam. Looks ready for 1000m.
MISS HOFF (Flying Artie-Beach Babe) looks well educated and has speed. Sat with pace all the way and kept fighting hard to the line to claim second spot behind Vaccine. They ran strong time and she will improve off this trial.
Colts and Geldings
KALASHNIKOV (Capitalist-Rough Ride). Has been very, very educated and is extremely forward. Which all showed in his trial. He’s by the Slipper winner and runs a lot like him too. Ran fast time and more importantly ran super fast time late. Might be a star.
RIVER SNITTY (Snitzel-Savannah River) sat behind a good speed and did accelerate very well when asked to loom up, grab the leada and then defy challenges. Time was handy but he may have carried more weight than the others which adds merit to his run. Looks pretty handy.
RETRIEVAL (Medaglia D’oro-Shelters) ran slow time and took a while to wind up but did carry a bit of weight and was held up for most of the straight. Was given a cut with the stick once he found the gap and showed good acceleration. This was too short for him and 1000m will suit more.
CONSTRUCT (I Am Invincible-Martindale Hall) ran home nicely. Was beaten in his trial but he looks like a horse who will develop into a pretty handy type. Made solid ground from off the speed late suggesting a little further will suit him a great deal.
ATHELRIC (Exceed And Excel-Ida) looks pretty sharp and ready to race right now. Sat behind pace then burst through to take the lead and fight on when ridden out. Beaten a nostril in useful time. Carried more weight than the winner and ran bravely.
*Overall, you couldn’t go past the two fillies, Enthaar and Vaccine as the stars from day one. They both looked to be really special.
The next set of official trials is next week.
