RACE THREE – PROVINCIAL-MIDWAY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Kinloch was the lesser fancied of the Kris Lees runners but it finished off best to take out the top prize.
The I Am Invincible gelding was $12 most of the week and again on race morning, however, drifted to $17 at the jump after attracting only moderate support.
Most of the money was riding on his stablemates Rustic Steel ($6-$5.50) and Never Talk ($3.90-$4) with the pair holding 52 percent of the total investment.
BETS: Kinloch $1,000 e/w @ $16/$4.40
RACE FOUR – FURPHY PERCY SYKES STAKES
TAB bookies took on Paris Dior, however, it was a move that backfired as she was too strong for her rivals in the Percy Sykes Stakes (1200 metres).
Out of the Peter and Paul Snowden barn, Paris Dior ($2.30-$4) blew out but she fought on strongly to beat the money horse, Willinga Beast ($15-$5) in a thrilling finish.
Paris Dior’s win meant TAB took a terrible loss on the race.
BETS: Paris Dior $40,000 @ $3.80
RACE FIVE – THE ARROWFIELD 3YO SPRINT
Just four runners went around in the Arrowfield and it was a popular result with Mazu getting the cash.
Giving Team Snowden a feature race running double, Mazu ($2.20-$2.70) drifted slightly and lost favouritism to In The Congo ($2.50), who went around with slightly more money than the winner.
Paulele ($3.50-$3.70) was easily best of the others but in terms of money held compared to the quinella pairing, he held nearly 50 percent less than Mazu.
BETS: Mazu $10,000 @ $2.70, $5,000 @ $2.70, $2,000 @ $2.70 MULTIPLE TIMES
RACE SIX – THE STAR AUSTRALIAN OAKS
El Patroness caused a boilover in the Oaks at $26 on TAB Fixed Odds.
Never really fancied by TAB punters, El Patroness ($19-$26) only had light backing and held a fraction of what the more favoured runners in the Group One did.
Honeycreeper ($4-$3.40-$4.40) had support all week after opening at $6 but blew out late while Gypsy Goddess ($4.60-$4) and Hinged ($3.80 fav) were the two they came for late. The latter overtook Honeycreeper for favouritism in the final five minutes of betting.
BETS: El Patroness $1,000 e/w @ $26/$6, $1,000 e/w @ $19/$4
RACE SEVEN – SCHWEPPES SYDNEY CUP
The money for Knight’s Order was spot on after it led throughout to take out the Sydney Cup (3200 metres).
The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott-trained galloper was $10 in the morning and jumped at $8.50, attracting plenty of eachway investments throughout the afternoon.
Stockman, which had been $5 favourite in the morning, got out to $8 and went around as the most popular runner in terms of money held.
Crystal Pegasus ($6.50) was solid for most of the day and jumped favourite, holding more money than anything else outside of Stockman.
Sheraz ($11) ran right up to the support for it and it hovered around the $10-$11 mark most of the day.
BETS: Knight’s Order $1,500 @ $9, $1,000 @ $9, $1,500 @ $8, $1,000 @ $8 MULTIPLE TIMES
RACE EIGHT – LONGINES QUEEN ELIZABETH STAKES
Think It Over ($34) was the least favoured runner in the feature of the day – the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000 metres).
Kerry Parker’s stable star only held just three percent of the money compared to race favourite Verry Elleegant ($3-$3.80-$3.60), which did get out in the betting, but was one of the most popular horses all day in terms of money held.
Verry Elleegant held 42 percent of the total investment with the next best being Anamoe ($4.40-$4) but he held nearly half of what she did.
BETS: Verry Elleegant $22,500 @ $3.80
BETS: Anamoe $10,000 @ $4, $5,000 @ $4 TWICE
RACE NINE – SYDNEY’S QUEEN OF THE TURF STAKES
Nimalee didn’t have a great deal of admirers heading into the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600 metres).
Matt Smith’s mare opened the day at $23 and blew to $31 at the jump, going around as one of the least favoured runners in the Group One.
Colette ($3.80-$3.20-$4) blew late in betting but still went around with nearly three times as much money as punters’ pal Icebath ($6-$5.50), while Yonce ($7.50) was well tried at the eachway price.
BETS: Colette $5,000 @ $4
